Israel Killed Over 25,000 Palestinians Since Hamas Attack: US Defence Chief

Israel has killed more than 25,000 Palestinian women and children since the October 7 attack by militant group Hamas, US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin said Thursday.

"It's over 25,000," Austin told lawmakers when asked during a House Armed Services Committee hearing for the figure on women and children killed.

The United States has backed Israel since the unprecedented Hamas attack in October that resulted in the deaths of around 1,160 people.

Israel responded to the attack with a relentless assault on Gaza that the coastal territory's health ministry said has left more than 30,000 people dead.

The number provided by Austin is within the same range, and come as Washington pushes for a ceasefire and a reduction in civilian casualties in Gaza.

Vote For BJP, Or You Will Go To Hell, Says Telangana BJP MP: Report

A video of Nizamabad Lok Sabha MP D Arvind saying that people will go to hell if they don't support BJP after benefitting from schemes implemented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has gone viral.

In the video, Mr Arvind is seen addressing a gathering at a Vijay Sankalp Yatra recently, requesting the people not to "bite the hand that is feeding them".

"You are getting free food, free gas, good schools are being set up. He (Prime Minister Narendra Modi) is taking care of your health. He is sending money for marriages. He is giving loans to SHGs. It is Narendra Modi who has abolished triple talaq and ensured your self-respect," he said.

"After all this, if you vote for Congress or BRS, 'uparwala' (God) will take you to hell. You will not go to heaven. I am saying that you will go to hell. Don't bite the hand that feeds you," the BJP MP was seen saying in the video.

Mr Arvind could not be reached for comment.

He appealed to the gathering that if they want to go to heaven , they should support and vote for those who are giving services to the country and securing it, alluding to his party the BJP.

"Otherwise God also will not pardon you people," he was seen to be telling the crowd.

He was also seen in another video stating that all Hindus should be united and vote for the BJP, failing which they would go to hell.

The real traitors are those who are in Hindu society and do not support BJP, he was heard saying in the video.

Congress 3, BJP 1: Rajya Sabha Election Results Out For Karnataka

The ruling Congress in Karnataka won three seats and the BJP one in the Rajya Sabha elections in Karnataka on Tuesday, which were marred by cross-voting in a setback to the saffron party.

Ajay Maken, G C Chandrasekhar and Syed Naseer Hussain, all from the Congress, and Narayansa K Bhandage of the BJP got elected to the Upper House in the polls in which elected MLAs were the voters.

Five candidates, including D Kupendra Reddy of the JD(S) who lost the election, were in the fray for the four seats.

According to official sources, the value of each MLA's vote is 100 and the number of votes sufficient to secure the election of a candidate is 4,441.

Maken, Hussain and Bhandage got 4,700 votes each and Chandrashekhar 4,500. Reddy got only 3,600 votes and therefore did not make the cut.

BJP MLA S T Somashekar voted for Mr Maken, while another party legislator A Shivaram Hebbar abstained.

The BJP said it was exploring the possibility of taking legal action them and lodging a complaint with the Speaker U T Khader seeking their disqualification from the assembly for violating the whip issued to them to vote in favour of the party candidate.

"We have got the information that Somashekar has done cross-voting. I consulted with advocate Vivek Reddy who is our state legal cell president and a high court lawyer. We will ask the Speaker to initiate action (of disqualification) against him (Somashekar) and explore the possibilities to take steps in accordance with the law," Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly R Ashoka said.

Mr Somashekar had earlier quit the Congress and joined the BJP. He served as a minister in the previous BJP government and was made the Mysuru district in-charge minister back then.

In recent months, Mr Somashekar and Mr Hebbar had distanced themselves from the BJP and increasingly began identifying with the Congress.

The BJP (66 MLAs) and the JD(S) (19 MLAs) combined had fielded Kupendra Reddy though they did not have the requisite votes to get him elected.

The NDA partners said they were expecting "conscience votes", apparently from the rival Congress camp, in favour of Mr Reddy.

The Congress has 134 members in the assembly. There are also four others members, including two independents.

Mr Somashekar said he heard the "voice of his conscience" and voted in favour of the Congress, "which built schools and carried out developmental works in his constituency". Hebbar too said he abstained from voting adhering to his conscience.

"This is not 'atma sakshi' (conscience) but 'atma droha' (self betrayal)," BJP MLC N Ravi Kumar said, commenting on Somashekar's and Hebbar's actions.

The BJP and JD(S) workers staged a demonstration in Bengaluru against Mr Somashekar. Raising slogans, they burnt his effigy.

Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress chief, ridiculed the BJP and the JD(S) saying, "'Conscience vote seekers' have become 'conscience vote givers'." "I don't know about cross-voting. I haven't seen the votes of others and independents. Ask the BJP, who spoke about conscience votes," Mr Shivakumar quipped.

Asked if there is legal support for those who have cast conscience votes to Congress candidates, he said, "Let's talk about it when it happens. I am not aware of any complaint filed with the Speaker regarding cross-voting.

"Mr Somashekar has cast his vote as per his conscience. It's a vote against the unholy BJP-JD(S) alliance. The general public, graduates, and teachers have rejected the alliance. Let's see what the legislators think." Chief Minister Siddaramaiah earlier hit out at the JD(S), alleging that the party had sought to lure and threaten its MLAs.

"JDS needs 45 votes (for their candidate) to win. Do they have that many votes? Even though they don't have enough votes, they still fielded the candidate and are luring our MLAs. Do they have a conscience?" the chief minister asked.

"An FIR has been lodged regarding the threat to us," Siddaramaiah said.

Speaking to reporters here, Siddaramaiah lashed out at the JD(S), saying, "When JD(S) does not have 'atma' (soul), how can it have 'atma sakshi' (conscience)? They call themselves Janata Dal (Secular) but whom did they join with?". He was referring to the JD(S) forming an alliance with the BJP.

Former chief minister and JD(S) second-in-command H D Kumaraswamy said the FIR against Kupendra Reddy and his aides was registered at Vidhana Soudha police station.

Mr Kumaraswamy said the complainant MLA did not say that he was lured, but that some other MLAs were "approached".

"Melukote MLA Darshan Puttannaiah of Karnataka Sarvodaya Paksha too had said that it's true that his vote was sought but no one had lured him," the JD(S) state chief claimed.

Mr Kumaraswamy said the BJP and JD(S) had decided to field Kupendra Reddy on the basis of the votes of the 19 JD(S) MLAs and the additional BJP votes after its first preferential votes.

"Not Freedom Of Speech": Minister On Space To Khalistani Elements Abroad

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar called out the space given to extremist Khalistani elements in foreign countries and said this is not freedom of speech, but a misuse of it.

He said it is not good for any country to send that kind of message for their own reputation and expressed hope that action will be taken against those who attacked Indian missions.

The Minister was speaking at the event 'The Rise of the Global South' at TV9 Bharatvarsh Conclave on Monday.

Speaking about the situation in Canada, Mr Jaishankar said, "We had to suspend the issue of visas in Canada because our diplomats were not safe going to work, they were repeatedly threatened, intimidated, and got very little comfort from the Canadian system at that time...which has improved since then."

"We reached a stage, where, as a minister, I could not risk exposing my diplomats to the kind of violence prevalent there. That part of it has been rectified, so today our visa operations are pretty much normal," he added.

The Minister further called out the argument of 'freedom of expression' stating that throwing smoke bombs at missions and advocating violence is a "misuse" of freedom of speech.

"Regarding the space that is being given to extremists, they keep telling us, 'There is freedom of speech, democracy'. Freedom of speech can't extend to intimidating diplomats, throwing smoke bombs in embassies and consulates, advocating violence and separatism against a friendly state. To me, this is not freedom of speech. This is a misuse of freedom of speech," Mr Jaishankar said.

Recalling the vandalism incident on the Indian High Commission in the UK, he said that the mission didn't get the protection New Delhi had expected.

"To the point of someone climbing on to our HC and bringing down our Indian flag. I asked my colleagues 'Let's put us in each other's shoes'. How would you react if a mob attacked your premises anywhere in the world? You will not say freedom of speech and expression, you will be jumping up and down. But, things have improved in the UK," the Minister said.

In a stern message, Mr Jaishankar said that if a country is not taking action against someone attacking foreign missions, "there is a message in it."

"We have had a much firmer response in Australia and the US. We had an arson attack in the US, but that is under investigation. If the receiving state does not take action against someone who attacks an embassy or a consulate, there's a message in it. Now, I don't think it's good for any country to send that kind of message for their own reputation. That's why we want action to be taken against those who attacked our missions," Mr Jaishankar added.

Notably, there has been a rise in Khalistani extremism in several countries like Canada, Australia, the US and the UK.

After the killing of the designated terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar last June, the Khalistani extremists targeted Indian diplomats in several countries and issued threats against them.

Especially in Canada, multiple incidents of Khalistan extremism were reported lately. In June this year, a tableau parade was organised in Canada celebrating the assassination of former PM Indira Gandhi, which drew severe criticism from New Delhi. Multiple temples were also vandalised in Canada by pro-Khalistani protestors, with anti-India graffiti.

Amid strained ties, India stopped issuing visas to Canada amid concerns over the safety of Indian envoys there. Later, the e-visa service was resumed, and physical visa was also started in multiple categories.

In the UK, a group of extremist elements attacked the Indian High Commission in London last March.

Similarly, in the US, the Consulate General of India in San Francisco was attacked on March 19 by a group of assailants. Subsequently, on July 2, at midnight, a few people attempted to set the Consulate building on fire. The case is being probed by the National Investigation Agency.

"Following Indian Supreme Court": Top Bangladesh Official To Chief Justice DY Chandrachud

Appreciating the live streaming of court proceedings, virtual hearing and use of technology at the Supreme Court of India, a top Bangladesh official told Chief Justice DY Chandrachud that they are closely following the Indian Supreme Court.

According to sources, Chief Justice Chandrachud was also told that Bangladesh wants to follow the Indian Supreme Court in these matters.

Chief Justice Chandrachud, speaking at the wo-day conference 'South Asian Constitutional Courts in the Twenty-First Century: Lessons from Bangladesh and India', said both India and Bangladesh share the tradition of constitutional and judicial systems largely aiming to ensure stability and both nations recognised their constitutions as "living documents".

Bangladesh's apex court judges took part in the conference, which drew many jurists, senior lawyers, and government leaders including Law Minister Anisul Huq.

"Our shared tradition aims to ensure stability, but when stability is desired, the stability must never be confused with stagnation," Chief Justice Chandrachud said.

"We recognise our constitutions are living documents. The constitutions of Bangladesh and India proclaim that they are 'given to the people by the people themselves' as citizens of sovereign nations," Chief Justice Chandrachud said.

Apart from Chief Justice Chandrachud, Supreme Court judges Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Dipankar Dutta were also present during the conference.

Chief Justice Chandrachud said the Indian and Bangladeshi court systems should encourage the enhanced practice of mediation for dispute resolution, discarding "adversarial litigations".

"Today, we need to ensure that we look into the needs of our society, ensure social growth and social progress by allowing our marginalised groups to come to the mainstream," said the Chief Justice, explaining how the judge's role in the post-colonial era was undergoing a change.

In her address, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government has made the judiciary totally independent, separating it from the administration by allocating a separate budget for it.

In a case of suspected 'honour' killing, a 26-year old man was hacked to death here by his brother-in-law and four other accomplices, police said on Sunday. All the five accused persons have been arrested, they said.

The victim, G Praveen, was surrounded by his wife's elder brother Dinesh and his friends near a bar at suburban Pallikaranai on Saturday night. The five-member gang inflicted serious injuries on Praveen using machetes and later fled the spot.

Police personnel rushed Praveen to the Chromepet Government Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

A preliminary probe by the police revealed that Praveen was an accused in a murder case in 2022 and that he married a woman in November 2023 against the wishes of her family members. Praveen and his wife belong to different communities.

A special police team arrested all the five men at Mambakkam on the outskirts of the city today morning. Further investigation is on, police said.

Manipur Group Calls To End Suspension Of Ops Agreement, Days Before Review

A global alliance of Manipur's Meitei community has called for scrapping a controversial ceasefire with over two dozen Kuki-Zo insurgent groups amid the ethnic conflict between the hill-majority Kuki-Zo tribes and the valley-majority Meiteis.

The Kuki-Zo insurgent groups that signed the tripartite suspension of operations (SoO) agreement with the Centre and the Manipur government in 2008 have been hiding under the SoO safety net "to covertly act against India's peace and security," the Meitei Alliance, a group whose members are Meitei civil society organisations around the world including in the UK, the US, and Europe said in a statement on Saturday.

Every year, a joint monitoring group (JMG) reviews the SoO agreement and decides whether to end or renew it. The next review is on February 29. Broadly, the SoO agreement says the insurgents are to stay at designated camps and their weapons kept in locked storage, to be monitored regularly.

The Manipur government in March 2023 announced it had withdrawn from the SoO agreement with the Kuki National Army (KNA), and the Zomi Revolutionary Army (ZRA). However, only the JMG can decide on such matters, which indicates the state government's move was only a request to the JMG, sources said.

The over two dozen Kuki-Zo insurgent groups come under two umbrella groups - the Kuki National Organisation (KNO), and the United People's Front (UPF). These two representing the others have signed the SoO agreement.

"Suspension of operations with any armed group is, technically speaking, to restore law and order and to ensure security in the country. But when it is used to mask privatisation of violence, it poses a threat to the security of the state as well as life and property of citizens," Bimol Akoijam, professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University's Centre for the Study of Social Systems, said in a statement today.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The Meitei Alliance also published a booklet detailing what it claimed were instances of SoO agreement ground rules violations by Kuki-Zo insurgents.

"Kuki-Zo armed groups have always kept their larger long-term political goal of carving out a sovereign territory called Zale'n-gam. They merely take advantage of SoO to systematically build up their strength to achieve prioritised goals achievable within the Constitution of India," the Meitei Alliance said in the booklet titled 'Ghost of Peace: Why Not Abrogate SoO Agreements With Kuki Armed Groups to Prevent Destabilisation of India?'

"In the long run, Kuki armed groups in the Indo-Myanmar borderland may shift allegiance and become the proxy of an entirely different, globally powerful expansionist force to become a perennial threat to India's internal security and more extensive geostrategic interests," the Meitei Alliance said, days after it submitted a memorandum to Home Minister Amit Shah with a request to scrap the SoO agreement.

Mr Akoijam, who recently published a report on the media's shortcomings on reporting the Manipur issue, called for disarming all armed groups in order to end the "privatisation of violence" and ensure "only the State has monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force".

"I have indicated before there is something that has already been discussed among scholars and activists that the privatisation of violence is unacceptable. Only the State must have the monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force. That is what the State is. Now, if you privatise it (violence), that is not done... Has SoO become something like a mask to hide the truth? That is something people have to ask," Mr Akoijam told reporters in Delhi on Saturday.

'Amend, Review SoO Agreement, Not Scrap It': Retired Army Officer

Major Md Ali Shah (retired), who was a part of the panel discussion on the SoO agreement in Delhi on Saturday, recommended not to put pressure on the Centre and the state government to scrap the agreement, and instead push for reviewing it and taking corrective actions to ensure the ground rules are followed by the insurgent groups.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

"I have a slightly different point of view. I am sure you have the maturity to understand it... The moment any agreement is retracted, it won't go down well. I personally don't stand for termination of SoO. There can be a review, no doubt. There can be amendments, no doubt. But terminating the agreement won't be the solution to the problem," Major Shah told reporters.

Another former army officer, Lieutenant General Konsam Himalay Singh (retired), also pointed at the scope of improvement of the SoO agreement. "... Simply following the ground rules would have prevented the worsening of the present situation. The rules were violated in many ways, though only the Manipur government's records can confirm this. Even now, there is scope for improvement, like biometric identification of the inmates, reducing the number of camps, and strict enforcement of ground rules," Lt General Singh said in a statement.

"But violence has spread much further. Now immediate and forceful actions to contain it are necessary, including all illegal armed groups," said Lt General Singh, the first officer from the northeast to become a Lieutenant General in the Indian Army, and who was honoured with the Yudh Seva Medal after the Kargil War in 1999, when he commanded the 27th Battalion, Rajput Regiment, in the high-altitude battlefield Siachen.

Allegations Against Meitei Insurgents Who Signed Peace Deal

The ethnic violence in Manipur over disagreements on land, resources, political representation, and affirmative action policies has dragged on for nine months now.

Both sides accuse each other of atrocities. The Kuki-Zo tribes say their "village defence volunteers" have been repelling attacks by armed groups from the valley, who come to the hills across the "buffer zone" with obvious intentions. Both call themselves "village defence volunteers", a definition of the belligerents in Manipur that has become the most controversial since nothing stops these "volunteers" from killing people under the insurance provided by "in self-defence".

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

However, members of Manipur's oldest valley-based armed group UNLF, which signed a tripartite peace agreement with the centre and the state government in November 2023 - the first Meitei insurgent group to do so - are allegedly engaged in violent activities against both the security forces and the public, news agency PTI reported on February 18.

The recent sightings of insurgents of the Kh Pambei faction of the United National Liberation Front (UNLF) in Manipur's Moirangpurel, Tumukhong, and Itham have raised concerns, with reports indicating they were carrying out reconnaissance to set up camps in these areas, PTI reported.

The gates of houses of Kuki-Zo tribes in parts of Imphal valley including the Games Village in the Langol foothills have the acronym 'UNLF' written on them, sources who have been to the area said, requesting anonymity.

While the Kuki-Zo tribes accuse the Meiteis of razing their vacant buildings and occupying them in and around Imphal valley, the Meiteis have pointed at entire localities of their community flattened and erased in the hill district Churachandpur.

A similarity between the "village defence volunteers" of both sides is that they appear to be well-armed and well-equipped with modern battle gear. The security forces have frequently recovered Russian-origin AK and US-origin M series assault rifles, and gun models commonly used by both the junta's army and pro-democracy insurgents in neighbouring Myanmar.

Over 180 have died in the violence, and thousands have been internally displaced.

Private Moon Lander Enters Orbit For 1st US Lunar Touchdown In 50 Years

A moon lander built by Houston-based company Intuitive Machines reached lunar orbit on Wednesday, headed for an attempt at the first US touchdown on Earth's nearest celestial neighbour in more than 50 years, and the first ever by a private spacecraft.

The six-legged Nova-C lander, dubbed Odysseus, entered a circular orbit 57 miles (92 km) above the lunar surface after firing its main rocket thruster for nearly seven minutes in an orbital insertion manoeuvre, the company said in an online statement.

Assuming all goes according to plan, the robot spacecraft is expected to gradually lower its orbit over the next 24 hours and land at crater Malapert A near the moon's south pole at 5:49 p.m. EST (2249 GMT) on Thursday, carrying a suite of NASA science instruments and technology demonstrations.

Odysseus was launched six days ago, on Feb. 15, atop a Falcon 9 rocket built and flown by Elon Musk's California-based company SpaceX from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.

If the landing succeeds, the IM-1 mission would represent the first controlled descent to the lunar surface by a U.S. spacecraft since Apollo 17, when NASA's last crewed moon mission carried Gene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt landed there in 1972.

It also would mark the first "soft landing" on the moon ever by a commercially manufactured and operated vehicle and the first under NASA's Artemis lunar program, as the U.S. races to return astronauts to Earth's natural satellite before China lands its own crewed spacecraft there.

The IM-1 mission comes about a month after the lunar lander of another firm, Astrobotic Technology, suffered a propulsion system leak on its way to the moon shortly after being placed in orbit on Jan. 8 by a United Launch Alliance (ULA) Vulcan rocket making its debut flight.

The malfunction of Astrobotic's Peregrine lander, which was also flying NASA payloads to the moon, was the third time a private company had failed to achieve a lunar touchdown, following ill-fated efforts by companies from Israel and Japan.

Those mishaps illustrated the risks NASA faces in leaning more heavily on the commercial sector than it had in the past to realize its spaceflight goals.

Although considered an Intuitive Machines mission, the IM-1 flight is carrying six NASA payloads of instruments designed to gather data about the lunar environment ahead of NASA's planned first crewed Artemis mission to the moon later this decade.

NASA announced last month that it was delaying its target date for the first crewed Artemis moon landing from 2025 to late 2026, while China has said it was aiming for 2030.

Small landers such as Nova-C are expected to get there first, carrying instruments to closely survey the lunar landscape, its resources and potential hazards. Odysseus will focus on space weather interactions with the moon's surface, radio astronomy, precision landing technologies and navigation.

To date, spacecraft from just five countries have ever landed on the moon - the United States, the former Soviet Union, China, India and, most recently just last month, Japan.

Bryan Johnson, the 46-year-old software billionaire, who is on a quest to reverse his biological age, recently claimed in a video that he has beat both balding and graying. In a video posted on YouTube on February 9, he revealed 3 tactics he uses to keep his hair looking healthy and luscious. This routine forms part of his Project Blueprint initiative to stay forever young.

In the clip, he told his followers to start taking precautionary measures before their strands start to thin or shed. ''The best time to work on your hair is before you start losing it,'' Mr Johnson said.

The anti-aging guru revealed he uses red light therapy every morning to maintain a full head of hair. The method requires him to wear a battery-powered red light therapy cap for six minutes, as it ''increases blood flow and also stimulates hair follicle activity''.

He then uses a special topical treatment made up of ingredients like Caffeine, Finasteride, Minoxidil Azelaic Acid, Diclofenac,  Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary, Ginko Biloba, Biotin and Melatonin.

Watch the video here:

Mr Johnson has also been using microneedling and taking specialized platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections. To fight off grey hair, he uses GR7, an anti-hair loss and anti-gray treatment which he applies three or four times per week, and Mayraki, a colored herbal extract that he applies once a week.

''We biopsied my hair, we looked at it under the microscope and we see that the color is being produced beneath the scalp – so it's working,'' he explained.

People who don't know where to start could begin with using 5% of Romaine or the generic version, Minoxidil, the tech mogul advised.

Notably, the entrepreneur spends $2 million a year on medical diagnostics and treatments combined with a meticulously crafted regimen of eating, sleeping, and exercise to see if he can slow, and perhaps even reverse, the aging process.

Last year, Mr Johnson claimed that his daily regimen had given him the lung capacity and physical endurance of an 18-year-old, the heart of a 37-year-old, and the skin of a 28-year-old. He goes to bed by 8.30 pm, eats 2,250 calories a day between 6 am and 11 am, and has four to five hours of "concentrated thought". He doesn't drink and swallows a staggering 111 pills a day.

He takes more than 100 supplements a day and undergoes daily body fat scans and routine MRIs, conducted by a team of 30 doctors, as per Fortune. He has also swapped blood with his teenage son.

Notably, Mr Johnson made his fortune in his 30s when he sold his payment processing company Braintree Payment Solutions to eBay for $800 million in cash.  He is reportedly worth $400 million.

Ex-India Star, Who Suggested Ranji Trophy To Be 'Scrapped', Now Says This

A day after his retirement from cricket, Bengal star Manoj Tiwary raised concerns over the IPL-centric approach of young cricketers and strongly advocated for greater emphasis on Ranji Trophy. The 38-year-old Tiwary, who served Bengal for about two decades and represented India in 12 ODIs and three T20Is, had recently posted on X that Ranji Trophy should be "scrapped" but did not elaborate on the subject as he was an active BCCI cricketer. He was fined 20 per cent of his match fee for that remark.

He also had a Facebook live in the midst of the match where he said he would come out in the open after taking retirement.

"I can observe that young players have adopted an IPL-centric mindset," Tiwary said, referring to central contracted players opting out of playing domestic cricket.

"Those who don't play IPL often go to Dubai or other places whenever they find some free time. However, this trend is diminishing the significance of the prestigious Ranji Trophy.

"Now, expressing any opinion might lead to a ban. I have already been penalised with a 20 percent reduction in my match fee for just one post."

Ishan Kishan's reluctance to play first-class cricket and focus only on the IPL forced the BCCI to make a minimum number of Ranji Trophy games mandatory for players in order to be eligible for the cash-rich league's lucrative auction pool.

"In hindsight, I feel that the directive issued by the BCCI might not have been given had I not posted it on X. Perhaps my post prompted the BCCI secretary to put the players under pressure now.

"The seriousness they have shown by taking this step in the crucial stage of the Ranji Trophy indicates their concern that many players, especially high-profile ones who have succeeded in the IPL with limited first-class cricket, are not giving enough importance to the Ranji Trophy," Tiwary said.

"I could have spoken up earlier, but it seems that the BCCI is no longer governed by sportspersons; it's now run by politicians. I am associated with a political party, but I am also a sportsperson.

"I don't want to engage in a fight; I simply want the Ranji Trophy to be prioritised, as it is slowly losing its importance."

 'Essence of IPL has lost'

Tiwary further went on to criticise the the approach of young cricketers. "The new-age cricketers adopt a 'Bazball' approach, swinging the bat aggressively from the first ball. Personally, I dislike this approach because it focuses solely on winning or losing.

"However, there is a scope to save a match, especially when facing a potential loss. They are aiming to secure an IPL contract or improve their strike rate to attract attention.

"I won't blame the players; it's a situation that has emerged. The essence of IPL seems to have been lost.

"IPL is a massive platform for all of us, but I also request the BCCI president and secretary to increase the significance of the Ranji Trophy.

"Many players have emerged from this tournament. While we celebrate winning series, it is disheartening that we are unable to clinch ICC trophies, whether it be the WTC or World Cup.

"We feel saddened because India has immense talent, unlike Australia, yet they have won numerous World Cups. The focus should ultimately be on ICC tournaments, with the Ranji Trophy playing an integral role in preparing players for such competitions."

"Reminds Me Of A Young Tendulkar": Shastri's Massive Praise For India Star

Former India head coach and ex-international player Ravi Shastri was all praise for young India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal following his terrific performance against Engalnd during the third Test in Rajkot. Jaiswal, who failed with a run-a-ball 10 in India's first innings, scored big in his next opportunity. He crafted a beautiful 104-run knock before an injury forced him to retire hurt mid-way. As soon as Jaiswal raced to his third Test century on Saturday, Shastri compared his skills to that of cricket great Sachin Tendulkar.

"Impressed with the way (Yashasvi) Jaiswal has stepped up today. Not just with the bat, but his performance on the field too. I think going forward, he could be one of Rohit's go-to part-time options. The ball would be in his hands - whether it's leg-spin, off-spin or medium-pace. Jaiswal reminds me of a young Tendulkar. Busy all the time," said Shastri during commentary after Jaiswal completed his ton as quoted by Hindustan Times.

"This is a classic example of the saying 'If you believe in yourself, there is hope'. Nothing is impossible. That's just a word. He will be constantly involved," he added.

Jaiswal retired hurt after hitting an attacking century to extend India's lead over England to 322 after the tourists' batting collapse in the third Test on Saturday.

India reached 196 or 2 in their second innings at stumps on day three in Rajkot, with Shubman Gill (65) and nightwatchman Kuldeep Yadav (three) batting at the close of play.

India have been left with 10 players to bat and bowl after Ashwin left the match late Friday due to a family emergency. Devdutt Padikkal came in as substitute fielder.

Joint Satellite Mission With NASA Not For Surveillance: Space Agency ISRO

The joint satellite mission ISRO has undertaken with US' NASA was not for surveillance purposes, but aimed at studying the Earth with a focus on sustainability, the space agency chief S Somanath said on Saturday.

The Bengaluru-headquartered ISRO is involved with The National Aeronautics and Space Administration, for developing a Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite to study the Earth following the impact of climate change, he said.

"The next mission of GSLV (rocket) is going to be the NISAR mission-- the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar mission, which is a very big satellite. The configuration and capability of the rocket has been steadily increasing in terms of payload capability as well as volume which is going to be extremely useful", he said.

Somanath was talking to reporters here after the successful launch of the GSLV-F14 INSAT-3DS satellite.

Responding to a query, Somanath clarified, "NISAR is not a surveillance satellite." "It is purely meant for some application....it has two Radars--one is an 'L' band radar and the other is 'S' band radar. 'S' band radar is Made by India and 'L' band radar is made by the US," he said.

"This data is in the public domain. So you can understand, when the data is in the public domain it is not going to be surveillance satellite. First of all, the data will be shared between the US and India," Somanath, Secretary of the Department of Space, said.

The joint mission has a focus on many things.

"...because it has image capability for about 12-14 days, imaging of the Earth can be done at a very high precision", he said about NISAR.

"The satellite would also be able to measure water, agriculture, coverage of greenery across the Earth's surface, and so many other parameters. It also has the ability to penetrate into the Earth to look at the availability of water in arid areas," he said.

"So it is a purely a satellite which is going to help in terms of sustainability, water, environment, agriculture--the changes that are occurring on Earth due to climate change. such things are primary focus of NISAR," Somanath added.

"No Buffer Zone, State Forces Can Go Anywhere": Manipur Chief Minister

There is no such thing as a "buffer zone" in Manipur and all forces can go anywhere in the state, Chief Minister N Biren Singh told reporters in the state capital Imphal today.

The Chief Minister also condemned "new groups that have sprang up" in recent times for "creating panic among people to run their agenda", and pointed at the Kuki-Zo group Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF), two days after protesters in the hill district Churachandpur set on fire government office buildings over the suspension of a head constable from their community.

The head constable, Siamlalpaul, was suspended over allegations that he had been training an armed group, who call themselves "village defence volunteers". His selfie and a video at a hill bunker, which had gone viral on social media, also contained visuals of young people armed with military-grade assault rifles, some with attachments like silencers and scopes; sniper rifles, and even submachine guns like the German-origin MP5.

"Some sections of people and security forces use the word 'buffer zone'. But the state government home department has clearly said there is no such thing as a 'buffer zone', which is usually seen in situations involving two nations," Mr Singh told reporters on Saturday.

"There are some sensitive areas, some hotspots where more violence is expected. The security forces operating in such areas is a different matter. But some people spreading things like 'you can't enter here or there' or beyond a certain area are wrong. There is no 'buffer zone'," he said.

"I have heard a particular paramilitary force saying so-and-so area is a 'buffer zone'. I would like to clarify immediately that there is nothing like a 'buffer zone' for the state government. Anytime, anywhere, any security force can operate across Manipur to handle threats. I have instructed the state forces to send special commandos in bulletproof vehicles to bolster the central forces if their action against armed groups are not effective," the Chief Minister said.

The Assam Rifles, controlled by the army but administratively managed by the Home Ministry, has come under criticism in Manipur over alleged inaction against illegal immigrants and other elements, including Kuki-Zo insurgents who have allegedly violated the ground rules of the tripartite suspension of operations (SoO) agreement signed with the Centre and the state government.

The central force has refuted all these allegations as rumours floated by anti-talks Meitei insurgents who are hiding in Myanmar.

Fierce Gunfights In Manipur's Sugnu

For the past three days, the security forces including the Border Security Force (BSF) have been engaged in fierce gunfights with suspected insurgents from the hills in Kakching district's Sugnu, 75 km from Imphal. A BSF soldier was injured in the gunfight on Thursday. Several 81 mm mortar rounds have landed in the heart of Sugnu town, police sources told NDTV, adding they have been attacked with large-calibre belt-fed machine guns.

"We have sent reinforcements to Sugnu... Forensic teams have taken samples of the damage to see what kinds of heavy weapons are being used, whether there is a foreign hand," Mr Singh said, alluding to allegations by the Meitei community in the valley that insurgents from Myanmar have been giving weapons to the Kuki-Zo tribes with whom they share ethnic ties. State Security Adviser Kuldiep Singh had, however, said there was no evidence of Myanmar insurgents' involvement in the Manipur crisis, though it is "suspected".

Reports and eyewitnesses' accounts from the ground, especially at Kwatha village near Pillar No. 81 - the India-Myanmar boundary - have alleged insurgents from across the border regularly cross into India.

"Cash Reward" Post For Killing Senior Cop In Churachandpur: Police Case Filed

The Chief Minister said a first information report (FIR) has been filed against social media user Babmang Hauzel, who offered a cash reward for killing the Churachandpur Superintendent of Police Shivanand Surve.

An FIR will also be filed against "an elected leader" whose "fake post" on social media incited people in Churachandpur to turn violent, Mr Singh told reporters.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

"This elected leader, who I will not name, posted fake news that no cop was suspended in armoury loot cases in the valley, while a cop was suspended in Churachandpur over a case. This incited people in Churachandpur. This is wrong information. We have also suspended seven cops and the forces guarding the armoury had opened fired to stop the protesters. Two were killed. We condemn such leaders spreading hate to confuse and incite people," the Chief Minister said, and warned the ITLF against misleading the public.

"We condemn the threatening language used by groups like ITLF that gave an ultimatum to the police chief and the district commissioner to leave Churachandpur," Mr Singh said, adding the protest was against the Superintendent of Police, but they also set the District Commissioner's office - where records are kept - on fire. "This act shows they have an agenda. We have ordered two magisterial investigation into the incident," he said.

Police Chief Entirely Responsible: Kuki-Zo Group ITLF

The ITLF in a statement late on Thursday had said the Churachandpur police chief was "entirely responsible for tonight's incident in the district", in which two protesters were killed in firing by central forces after the huge crowds threatened to overrun their positions. There are no state forces in Churachandpur.

The ITLF alleged videos have been doing the rounds on social media in the past few months showing Manipur Police personnel fighting alongside armed groups and attacking Kuki-Zo areas. "But no action has been taken against them," the ITLF said.

The protesters have said the head constable was suspended unfairly, and should be reinstated. Churachandpur was one of the areas most affected by the ethnic clashes that began in May 2023.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The former leader of a civil society group has also written to the Manipur Police to file a case against a senior officer for allegedly threatening to kill him. H Thangtinlen Daniel Mate, the former chief of the Tengnoupal unit Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), in the letter alleged that the Senior Superintendent of Police (Combat) Colonel Nectar Sanjenbam (retired) dialled him at night and threatened to kill him.

"I received a call from Mr Nectar's phone number... and because it was late at night I did not receive the call. Then after a few minutes I received a life-threatening text message... The text said that he knows me and that he was going to kill me," Mr Mate said in the letter to the officer in charge of Tengnoupal police station on Thursday.

"... I have not done anything against this person or any person to deserve such a life-threatening warning," he said.

No FIR has been filed yet.
