What Lankan President, Seeking Re-Election, Said About India: 5 Key Quotes

  1. "India and Sri Lanka have to have a close economic relationship. The vision statement that Prime Minister Modi and I had issued mentions this," Mr Wickremesinghe, who is seeking another term as President, told NDTV.
  2. Speaking further about areas of shared investment and development, Mr Wickremesinghe said, "India has a huge demand of renewable energy, as do we. That is an area we seek to strengthen ties. When the Singapore-India pipeline (via Andaman and Nicobar Islands) is complete, we too can look for opportunity in it."
  3. Other significant area that he said Sri Lanka aims partner with India for is to enhance port infrastructure and to get more tourists from India. "We want to encourage more investments from India and more tourists from India. We are working together with India on infrastructure projects like the Trincomalee Harbour," he said.
  4. Speaking about the social and cultural ties shared by the two countries, President Ranil Wickremesinghe said, "that has been happening for thousands of years". He also said that the two nations share very strong people-to-people ties and that it is the people's mutual regard and appreciation that is the bedrock of India-Sri Lanka relations. "There will always be some groups who may make anti-India remarks, what needs to be done is to minimise it. As far as the India-Sri Lanka friendship is concerned, it is decided by the people and they have already decided it. So, let's further strengthen (the bond)."
  5. India's economy has "taken off", the Sri Lankan President told NDTV, adding that Sri Lanka would also like to benefit from it, after all India is "just 20 miles away" and the two nations have shared deep cultural and historical ties. Mr Wickremesinghe further said that "Sri Lanka will deal with China as well to fulfill its national objectives, but at the same time, we will always keep India's interests in mind."

As Sri Lanka Votes, NDTV Asks Presidential Candidate 9 Key Questions

Sri Lanka, which is slowly recovering from its worst-ever economic crisis, will vote to elect the next President on Saturday. While current President Ranil Wickremesinghe is seeking another term in office, he is being challenged by the key Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa.

Mr Premadasa, 57, is the son of former President Ranasinghe Premadasa. He leads the Samagi Jana Balawegaya party or SJB, that separated from Ranil Wickremesinghe's party - United National Party or UNP in 2020.

Mr Premadasa's centrist, more left-leaning party has called for major changes to the $2.9 billion bailout programme with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and has outlined plans of his own to adjust some targets, such as changing taxes to reduce the cost of living. He plans a very different approach to that of Mr Wickremesinghe.

Mr Premadasa favours a mix of interventionist and free-market economic policies, and has promised subsidies and has been accused of promising freebies too at his election rallies. But he says he has a different vision for Sri Lanka and has a plan for how he will achieve them.

Speaking exclusively to NDTV, Mr Premadasa spoke about how his vision is different from the current regime, how he plans to revive the economy differently from how the current President is doing, how he views the India-Sri Lanka relationship and how he plans to tackle China.

Here are the key highlights of his interview to NDTV:

Q) What according to you makes these elections so significant and crucial?
A) Sri Lanka is facing multiple crises. In the economic sphere, the social sphere, the political sphere - and we don't have a legitimate government in the sense that the present administration is an extension of the administration that was primarily responsible for making Sri Lanka bankrupt. It is the very same parliamentary majority that led to the bankruptcy. So the Sri Lankan people are eagerly waiting to express their opinions and provide their mandate for change. Change that will make the country prosperous.

Q) It is acknowledged widely that the incumbent President, Ranil Wickremesinghe, is credited for bringing stability to the economy, but you are saying he is part of the problem and not the solution - that is a serious charge. Can you please elaborate?
A) If one takes out their laurels and gets on to the streets and talks to the poor, the downtrodden, the self-employed, the labour force, the entrepreneurs, the rural and urban estate sectors; if you look at the major sections of society, other than those who are super rich, people who have been impacted detrimentally, and if I may provide you with some statistics... stats which were ascertained by the government statistical department has Illustrated that more than 260,000 micro, small and medium sized enterprises have closed. Millions have become unemployed, millions more have become poor, and the government does not have a strategy to deal with it.

The micro, small, and medium sized enterprises contribute to 50% of GDP, employs over 4 million, so people are suffering from the policies of a government that has basically suffocated the people. So, if you achieving stability at great human cost... at a cost where people are suffering,  then I don't think that's the right way to do it.

Q) So, in comparison, what is your action plan?
A) Where we defer, is that we will grow ourselves out of the problem. We have to go on a massive economic growth trajectory. Huge amounts of FDI coming into Sri Lanka, restructuring of society to ensure that entrepreneurs thrive. That the hold of the bureaucracy, which has basically suffocated entrepreneurship, must be ended. Ensure that businesses flourish... ensure that the micro, small, and medium sized industry are given adequate support. What you have right now is not inclusivity, it's exclusive.

Q) So, how do you plan to ensure all this? How do you go about solving the funding problem? And furthermore, ensure that the economy grows and not shrinks because of the fund crunch?
A) You're quite correct in stating that the economy is fragile. That fragility does not give an excuse to be corrupt... to loot the public treasury. Shold we be elected, what we propose to do is to ensure that we follow good governance practices... ensure that the major indices that have a contributing factor with regard to foreign direct investment, good governance indices, ease of doing business... We should have a responsible government, a transparent government, and a  government that is accountable - All three are lacking at the moment.

Q) One of the criticisms your party has faced largely, is that you are promising large subsidies and freebies to people at a time when the economy is facing a fund crunch. Where will the funds come from? Would that not jeopardise the economy further?
A) We will eradicate the crony-capitalist structure that is existing at present. We will ensure that growth is the major phenomenon in our economic program. This government doesn't understand growth. They are contracting growth. To show everybody that the economy is stable, you're making everything smaller - That is not the way to go. We have to grow ourselves out of the problem. So, stability with malnutrition, stability with huge unemployment, stability with growth contraction, stability while losing livelihoods, stability while having lower standards of living... I'm sorry, I don't agree with that. The difference between the government and us is that we don't just focus on macroeconomics, we also look at the microeconomics. So, we are taking an overarching integrated approach, whereas this government is only keen on showing to the whole world and to a particular class in our country that everything is stable and fine.

Q) India has strategic interests in the region. India had and still has very close ties with Sri Lanka. How do you view the India-Sri Lanka relationship from here on?
A) When you talk of recovery, I must say in these very difficult and dire times, India has been one of the countries that has been very generous, and very supportive... and I would like to extend a very big thank you to the Indian government, PM Modi's government, and also to the people of India... and to the various states that have come forward to help our country. So, a big thank you. Having said that, I don't think Sri Lanka is on the correct path to recovery. So, we will ensure that we have a very balanced policy. Where India comes in, is that our External Affairs policy will be to promote our national interest. We will do what is right for our country, and it is in the interest of our country to have cordial relation with India and the rest of the powers in the world.

We do what recognise that we have a special relationship, a kinship, a camaraderie between our two countries and we have a history of positive progressive and good relationship. We have to build upon that and I think we will ensure that mutual interests that matter to both of us are accomplished.

Q) China is a significant player in the region and the last couple of years has seen a rise in Chinese Investments and  rise in Chinese naval presence in the region. How do you view the China equation for Sri Lanka?
A) As I mentioned to you, in our external relations, we have a special relationship with India. But we also have to work with all of the other nation states. I'm the only politician (from Sri Lanka) who has proposed that India must be included in the United Nations Security Council. Having said that, we as a country will work with all other countries, all other democracies, all other nation states to ensure that Sri Lanka's national interests are achieved. We will in no way work towards downgrading the security and geopolitical interests of others.

Q) What is your reasoning of wanting India as a veto power in the UN Security Council?
A) Well, that is a major reflection of global geopolitical reality and I must say it's not just China... all the five permanent members of the UN Security Council have veto power. Sri Lanka as a whole has been very balanced. We want to make sure that we protect our interests and also ensure that interests of other nation states are also not compromised and neutralised. So we are very sensitive to ensure that we don't interfere in the affairs of other nations.

Q) What would be your number one expectation or demand from India, keeping in mind your vision for Sri Lanka and the region?
A) First and foremost, I must say I don't demand. I always use uh the power to persuade. I will use all available skills at my disposal to persuade India to invest more in Sri Lanka, to support Sri Lanka to come out of this problem, to help the people of Sri Lanka... ensure that social and economic stability are protected. So, I would use my power to persuade your great country, India, to protect Sri Lankan people's human rights, not just political and civil rights, but their economic rights, their social rights, their right to life, right to alleviate poverty, right to alleviate unemployment... and that's the arena in which we hope to cooperate with India.

Andhra Clears New Liquor Policy, Adopts Private Retail System For Sale

The Andhra Pradesh Cabinet headed by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday approved the new excise policy and 33 percent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in legislative bodies, among others.

Addressing a press conference at the secretariat, I & PR Minister K Parthasarathy noted that the new excise policy will come into effect from October 1.

According to the minister, Mr Naidu directed officials to ensure that quality liquor is available in the southern state at a reasonable price while the allotment of retail outlet licenses will be done in a transparent manner.

US Rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs Charged With Racketeering, Sex Trafficking

Sean "Diddy" Combs used his fame as one of the biggest names in hip-hop to coerce women into engaging in demeaning sex acts as part of a decades-long scheme of sex trafficking and racketeering, according to a three-count federal indictment unsealed on Tuesday.

Starting in 2009, Combs used his vast media empire including his record label Bad Boy Entertainment to transport women, as well as male sex workers, across state lines to take part in recorded sexual performances called "Freak Offs" in which the music mogul would watch and masturbate, prosecutors said.

The 54-year-old rapper and producer was arrested in Manhattan on Monday night and is expected to appear in court before US Magistrate Judge Robyn Tarnofsky at 2:30 pm EDT (1830 GMT) on Tuesday. Combs could face decades in prison if convicted of the three felony counts he faces: racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking, and transportation to engage in prostitution.

The charges were brought by the office of Manhattan US Attorney Damian Williams, which is seeking to have Combs remain detained pending trial.

Combs enticed women by giving them drugs such as ketamine and ecstasy, financial support, or promises of career support or a romantic relationship, prosecutors said. Combs then used surreptitious recordings of the sex acts as "collateral" to ensure that the women would remain silent, and sometimes displayed weapons to intimidate abuse victims and witnesses, according to the indictment.

"The victims did not believe they could refuse Combs without risking their security or facing more abuse," Williams told a press conference.

The indictment contained no allegation that Combs himself directly engaged in unwanted sexual contact with women, though he was accused of assaulting women by punching them or throwing objects at them.

'A MUSIC ICON'

Marc Agnifilo, a lawyer for Combs, did not immediately respond to a request for comment after the indictment was made public, but on Monday night expressed disappointment with the decision to pursue an "unjust" prosecution of his client.

"Sean 'Diddy' Combs is a music icon, self-made entrepreneur, loving family man, and proven philanthropist who has spent the last 30 years building an empire, adoring his children, and working to uplift the Black community," Agnifilo said on Monday night. "He is an imperfect person, but he is not a criminal."

Combs is the highest-profile person in the music industry to face criminal charges for sexual misconduct since R. Kelly, the R&B singer. Kelly was sentenced to a combined 31 years in prison after being convicted in New York in 2021 and Chicago in 2022 on charges including sex trafficking, racketeering and child sex crimes.

Also known during his career as P. Diddy and Puff Daddy, Combs founded Bad Boy records and is credited with helping turn rappers and R&B singers such as Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Notorious B.I.G. and Usher into stars in the 1990s and 2000s.

His career and reputation have been marred over the past year. Last November, his former girlfriend Casandra Ventura, an R&B singer known as Cassie, accused him in a lawsuit of serial physical abuse, sexual slavery and rape during their decade-long relationship. She agreed to an undisclosed settlement one day after suing, even as Combs denied her allegations.

Combs has since faced several other civil lawsuits by women and men who accused him of sexual assault and other misconduct. His lawyers have been fighting those cases in court. Federal agents raided Combs' homes in Los Angeles and Miami Beach, Florida six months ago.

BABY OIL, AR-15 RIFLES

Employees of Combs helped arrange the "Freak Offs" by booking hotel rooms and buying controlled substances and other items used during sex, according to the indictment.

Authorities found drugs and 1,000 bottles of baby oil and lubricant during searches of Combs' homes in Miami, Florida and Los Angeles, along with AR-15 rifles with defaced serial numbers, according to the indictment.

The indictment did not specify how many women were alleged victims of the scheme.

The charges are not Combs' first brush with the law. He was acquitted in March 2001 of bribery and weapons charges in a criminal trial stemming from a nightclub shooting that left three people wounded.

The civil lawsuits that Combs faces include a case filed last week by the singer Dawn Richard, formerly of Danity Kane, who accused him of sexual assault, battery, sex trafficking, gender discrimination and fraud.

Also this month, a Michigan judge ordered Combs to pay a $100 million default judgment to Derrick Lee Smith, who said Combs drugged and sexually assaulted him at a party almost 30 years ago. A lawyer for Combs said he would seek a dismissal.

Combs has also denied claims in a February sex trafficking lawsuit by Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones, who Combs employed as a producer on his 2023 release "The Love Album: Off the Grid."

Instagram Rolls Out "Teen Accounts" With Parental Control For Underage Users

Meta Platforms is rolling out enhanced privacy and parental controls for Instagram accounts of users under 18 in a significant overhaul aimed at addressing growing concerns around the negative effects of social media.

Meta will port all designated Instagram accounts automatically to "Teen Accounts", which will be private accounts by default, the company said on Tuesday.

Users of such accounts can only be messaged and tagged by accounts they follow or are already connected to, while sensitive content settings will be dialed to the most restrictive available.

Users under 16 can change the default settings only with a parent's permission. Parents will also get a suite of settings to monitor who their children are engaging with and limit their use of the app.

Several studies have linked social media use to higher levels of depression, anxiety and learning disabilities, particularly in young users.

Meta, ByteDance's TikTok and Google's GOOGL.O YouTube already face hundreds of lawsuits filed on behalf of children and school districts about the addictive nature of social media. Last year, 33 U.S. states including California and New York sued the company for misleading the public about the dangers of its platforms.

Top platforms, including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok, allow users who are 13 years of age and above to sign up.

Meta's move comes three years after it abandoned development on a version of the Instagram app meant for teenagers, after lawmakers and advocacy groups urged the company to drop it, citing safety concerns.

In July, the U.S. Senate advanced two online safety bills - The Kids Online Safety Act and The Children and Teens' Online Privacy Protection Act - that would force social media companies to take responsibility for how their platforms affect children and teens.

As part of the update, the under-18 Instagram users will be notified to close the app after 60 minutes each day. The accounts will also come with a default sleep mode that will silence notifications overnight.

Meta said it will place the identified users into teen accounts within 60 days in the US, UK, Canada and Australia, and in the European Union later this year. Teens around the world will start to get teen accounts in January.

Kolkata Top Cop, Health Officials Removed After Mamata Banerjee-Doctors Meet

Bengal Chief Minster Mamata Banerjee, after meeting with the protesting junior doctors, has announced that she had agreed to three of the five demands of the protesting doctors -- the removal of two top officials of the health department and the Chief of Kolkata police.  Along with it, the police chief of the city's north zone -- where RG Kar Medical College, the hospital where the rape-murder of a young doctor took place, is located -- will also be removed.  Though the impasse is solved, the protest and the ceasework is expected to continue till the formal orders are issued in the morning.

"I think the meeting was positive. Am sure they think too," she said. "Or why else we will sign the minutes of the meeting and they would sign it too?" she added.

The junior doctors declared that the state's acceptance of their demands was a "big victory" of their 38-day protest. But even so their other aim -- the destruction of the nexus of corruption at the hospital -- remains. As for lifting the protest and the casework, that can only be done when the government delivers, they said.  "We have only received their verbal assurance," said a representative of the Junior Doctors' Forum.

Ms Banerjee said they have accepted 99 per cent of the doctors' demands, "because they are our younger brothers".

"I know they say they will go and discuss and then will decide on lifting the ceasework. But I have requested them to do so, citing the condition of patients, especially in view of the floods in some of the districts," the Chief Minister said.

About the removal of the two health officials -- the Director of Medical Education and the Director of the Health Services -- Ms Banerjee said they would be given transfers to proper posts.

"We are not dishonouring them. They have not been in the post for long and have done nothing wrong. But since the students said they do not have trust in them, we have accepted," Ms Banerjee said.

The Chief Minister's announcement took place close to midnight, after a two-hour meeting with the protesting doctors and another 2.5 hours to type out the minutes of the meeting.

The announcement is seen as a capitulation of sorts. The Chief Minister had earlier said that city police chief Vineet Goyal would be retained for at least the Durga puja. He had asked to resign several times, but she wanted him to stay back, she had said.

The demand for Mr Goyal's removal came in view of allegations about the police role in evidence tampering after the rape-murder of August 9. This was commented on multiple times by the Supreme Court and the Calcutta High Court.

Last week, the Central Bureau of Investigation or the CBI, which is investigating the case, has arrested the hospital's former Principal Sandip Ghosh and a senior officer of the local police.

The protesting junior doctors had come to the table after two failed attempts at talks with the Chief Minister. Escorted by a pilot police vehicle, around 30 doctors had arrived at Ms Banerjee's home at 6.20 pm. The meeting, which was expected to begin  at 5 pm, finally started around 7 pm and ended around 9 pm, after which the process to finalise the minutes started.

The doctors had taken their own stenographers to record the minutes. The document was signed by 40 doctors.

The impasse over the doctors' demand for justice for the rape-murder of the 31-year-old medic has been on for more than a month. The Supreme Court has already ordered that the doctors put an end to the ceasework and get back to patient care, which is suffering.

The order had ended the spread of the ceasework, as doctors across India had stood up to show solidarity with the protesters. But Bengal doctors had refused, doubling down with the protests as the common people kept up their support.

Water Storage Breach At Vedanta Alumina Unit In Odisha Impacts Farm Land

A water storage facility breach at miner Vedanta Aluminium's unit in Odisha has impacted agricultural land, the company said on Monday.

The incident, which happened at Vedanta's Lanjigarh alumina refinery in Odisha on Sunday, has alarmed environment experts who pointed out it was a serious matter as the toxic byproduct 'red mud' was involved.

The pumped water level, or PWL, has causticity in water, meaning it can corrode organic tissue by damaging skin, eyes and mucus membranes.

The water overflowed due to heavy rain, Vedanta Aluminium said.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Visuals of the industrial incident show process water lake downstream of a pond that appeared to have been formed by 'red mud'. A large volume of muddy red water was also seen flowing into open areas. The water covered the ground where some trees stood, and ran over other forms of vegetation.

'Red mud' is the waste generated in production of alumina from bauxite. It is also known as 'bauxite residue'.

A major environmental issue in handling or disposal of 'red mud' is the alkaline nature of waste that may pose risk of contamination due to seepage or overflow, according to the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) guidelines for handling and management of red mud generated from alumina plants.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

Historically, 'red mud' has been handled in slurry form and stored in ponds that have caused adverse impacts on the environment globally, including in India, the CPCB says in the guidelines.

There were no injuries or loss of livestock due to the flooding caused by the breach, a Vedanta spokesperson said in a statement.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

"There is no disruption in our current operations and the refinery continues to operate in compliance with regulatory requirements. Additionally, there is no damage to our red mud storage facility," the spokesperson said.

Fight Breaks Out After Indore Woman Allegedly Harassed By Bike-Borne Men

A woman was allegedly harassed by two bike borne men who reached into the window of her moving car on a busy road in Indore. The woman's husband and two other people - a man and a woman - were also inside the car. This led to an altercation between the car occupants and the men on two-wheelers, who were allegedly drunk. The incident happened on September 11.

CCTV footage shows the white car in which the women were sitting stop in the middle of the road, followed by a scooter and a bike which cover the car from both sides. After what seems to be a brief verbal exchange, the two men park their two-wheelers and physically confront the men stepping out of the car.

Later in the video, the man who was on the scooter climbs onto the bonnet of the car but is forcefully dragged off, followed by a shower of punches and kicks by the other man while the other bike-borne man tries to control the situation. At this point, several passersby gather at the scene, disrupting the traffic.

The police have filed cases based on complaints from both parties. While car occupants have filed a molestation case, the men on two-wheelers have accused the car driver of causing an accident.

The police have said that further investigation is on.

AI Can Change Belief In Conspiracy Theories, Study Finds

Researchers have now found that artificial intelligence can alter conspiracy beliefs, challenging the long-held idea that those who embrace these ideas are very unlikely to change. A number of conspiracy theories include the assertion that moon landings were fabricated, and another reports that microchips have been placed in the Covid-19 vaccines. Such beliefs sometimes have a devastating consequence.

The study, headed by associate professor of American University Dr Thomas Costello, revealed that AI indeed effectively promotes critical thinking and disproves fact-based counterarguments. They conducted experiments involving 2,190 people who already subscribed to conspiracy theories using an AI system called "DebunkBot.".

Participants shared their conspiracy theory and evidence supporting it with the AI and then engaged in a three-round conversation. Afterward, they rated the truth of their beliefs on a 100-point scale. Those who discussed their conspiracy theory with the AI showed a 20% drop in belief, while the change was minimal for those discussing non-conspiracy topics.

"About one in four people who began the experiment believing a conspiracy theory came out the other end without that belief," said Dr Costello.

"In most cases, the AI can only chip away-making people a bit more sceptical and uncertain-but a select few were disabused of their conspiracy entirely."

Effects lasted at least two months and applied to almost all types of conspiracy theories, except for those based on factual information. One in four participants who initially believed in a conspiracy theory completely abandoned it by the end of the experiment.

This would suggest that AI may play a pivotal role in warding off the scourge of misinformation, especially on social media. However, Professor Sander van der Linden of the University of Cambridge and others posed questions over whether people would eagerly participate with AI in real-life situations and, quite frankly, how they really managed to win over participants with their methods, including empathy and affirmation. At any rate, this study has worthwhile lessons to impart upon us about the capacity of AI when it comes to countering conspiracy theories.

After Madhya Pradesh Horror, A Relook At Over 45 Alleged Gang-Rape Cases

In the wake of a recent robbery and alleged gang-rape at Jam Gate, a popular tourist spot near Indore, disturbing details from a similar case at Kajligarh Fort have emerged. Nine years ago, over 45 women were allegedly gang-raped at Kajligarh Fort during a period of two years.

Although the Jam Gate incident has raised concerns, Indore Rural Superintendent of Police Hitika Vasal has said the two incidents are not connected.

A public interest petition (PIL) was filed in the Indore bench of the high court on the Kajligarh gang-rape cases. However, many are questioning why the government dismissed the police reports on such a serious matter.

The main accused in the Kajligarh cases had admitted to the crime, but no substantial action was taken. Similar to the Jam Gate incident, the survivors from the Kajligarh cases have refused to file police cases, raising further concerns about the handling of these cases.

In 2015, a group of BTech students visiting Kajligarh Fort were assaulted by members of a gang, which led to a police complaint being filed at Simrol. Despite an investigation, the accused escaped. However, soon after, the police discovered that some young men were spending large amount of money and flaunting expensive mobile phones. When detained and questioned, the police uncovered shocking links to multiple crimes.

After interrogation, the gang members including key suspects Sanjay Katara and Karan Dawar were arrested, while a minor was detained.

Latest and Breaking News on NDTV

The gang's leader later revealed the gang's involvement in at least 45 gang-rape cases over two years. They admitted the gang looted couples at the deserted Kajligarh Fort to fuel their drug habits.

The police reached out to some of the survivors, but they refused to file complaints, possibly due to fear or trauma. A petition was filed in the Indore bench of the high court, demanding action against officials responsible for not following up the cases. But no conclusive measures have been taken yet.

The Jam Gate Incident

In a chillingly similar manner, a robbery and alleged gang-rape took place at Jam Gate, another scenic location near Indore, on Tuesday night. Two trainee army officers and their female friend were attacked by armed miscreants, who came with the intent of looting.

Though the army officers were severely beaten up, they have given statements to the police. The woman who alleged gang-rape remains too shocked to give a statement. The key suspect in this case has been arrested and investigation is on to uncover more details, the police said.

"We have tried several times to record the woman's statement, but she is not yet ready. It is difficult to proceed until her statement is recorded," Superintendent of Police Hitika Vasal said.

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the Jam Gate incident, all of whom have a history of serious criminal activity. They are: Anil Baror, 27, the mastermind behind the crime, with previous charges of extortion, robbery, and family disputes; Pawan Bansuniya, 23, accused of smuggling banned liquor and robbery; Ritesh Bhabhar, 25, a mastermind with serious charges, including murder; Rohit Girwal, Sandeep Waria, and Sachin Makwana, all three with criminal history.

On the Kajligarh Fort gang-rape cases, former Indore West Superintendent of Police and Indian Police Service (IPS) officer D Kalyan Chakraborty shed light on the investigation process. They said while arrests were made and a first information report (FIR) was filed under sections on rape, the case was marred by the reluctance of the survivors to come forward.

Mr Chakraborty said while he couldn't provide detailed information without reviewing the records, he recalled that the case had indeed come to his attention during his tenure. The police had arrested several accused, and one-two key suspects had been taken into custody. Some of the accused had confessed to the crime, but a significant obstacle in the investigation was the absence of complaints from the survivors themselves.

"The accused were arrested, and an FIR was filed under the sections of rape. However, the major challenge was that no survivor was willing to file complaints. We had to rely on information and leads during the investigation," Mr Chakraborty said.

He said despite the lack of direct complaints, two-three survivors eventually came forward, which enabled the police to file the FIR. Following this, a thorough investigation was conducted, leading to the identification and prosecution of the accused.

"The investigation was done based on the information we had, and two-three survivors did step forward... The accused were found guilty, arrested, and a chargesheet was filed in the case," he said.

Siddaramaiah Seeks 9-State Strategy Session On Central Funds Share

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has written to the Chief Ministers of eight states to get together for a strategy session to negotiate a better financial deal for states that contribute more to the Central coffers. Besides the four southern states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the list also includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana and Punjab. Mr Siddaramaiah argues that higher income states are being pensalised for their economic performance. The current system undermines cooperative federalism and threatens financial autonomy of progressive states, he said.

His Kerala counterpart Pinarayi Vijayan has said they must stand together and fight, arguing that fiscal federalism is in threat.

The letter comes ahead of the 16th Finance Commission's move to finalise criterion for devolution of Central funds. Already, finance ministers of Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Punjab have met in Thiruvananthapuram to build consensus on their recommendations to the Finance Commission.

Over the last years, the tax share issue has been growing increasingly contentious, complicated, controversial and politically sensitive, with southern states getting increasingly vocal about getting an unfair deal despite their better performance.

Karnataka has said it receives just 15 paise for every rupee it contributes to the Union. Kerala and Tamil Nadu get 25 paise and 29 paise for every rupee they give. In comparison, Uttar Pradesh gets Rs 2.73 and Bihar receives Rs 7.06 for every rupee they contributed.

Southern states contribute 30 per cent to the GDP, have 19.6 per cent population. But tax devolution declined from 21 per cent under 11th Finance Commission to 15.8 per cent under the 14th Finance Commission.

The states are asking for a bigger share in central taxes. They say it should be hiked from the current 41 per cent to 50 per cent.

Their other demands and complaints:

  • Southern states account for 62% of expenditure but get 37 per cent revenue share.
  • Cess, surcharge account for 28 per cent of Central taxes and are not shared with states.
  • The states want a reduction in Centrally sponsored schemes, allowing them to spend according to local priorities. Expenditure on Centrally sponsored schemes is more than three times the grants to states.
  • They also say states that demographic discipline should not be punished.

Besides, the Deputy Chief Minister of Telangana, Bhatti Vikramarka, has sought that political representation of southern states be kept intact during delimitation. The good performance by states on population control, good governance, transparency should not be punished, he added.

"Southern states, despite their significant contribution to the GDP of over 30 per cent and representing a considerable portion of the population (19.6%), have seen their share in tax devolution decline from 21.073 per cent under the eleventh finance commission to just 15.8 per cent under the 15th Finance Commission," he said.

A motorbike was also seen passing her by before the car knocked her down.

Her family - that has been living in the Barra 7 area of Kanpur for the last ten years - was inside the house as she lay motionless on the road covered in her blood.

Video: Security Forces Show Anti-Drone System After Attacks In Manipur

Security forces today gave a demonstration of an anti-drone system at work in violence-hit Manipur, days after a man was killed in weaponised drone attacks launched by suspected Kuki insurgents from the hills near the valley district Imphal West.

Sunday's attacks, which the Manipur Police said were carried out by suspected Kuki insurgents, were the first recorded use of weaponised drones to drop bombs on civilians by suspected insurgents in India.

In a post on X, the Manipur Police said the Assam Rifles has deployed a few anti-drone systems in the fringe areas "to repel any rogue drones".

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), too, has tested an anti-drone system. The central force will bring more such systems soon, the police said.

The state police has also started the process of acquiring anti-drone systems to tackle aerial threats.

"AR [Assam Rifles] has deployed a few anti-drone systems in the state at fringe areas to repel any rogue drones. CRPF has also tested one anti-drone system and given it to the force deployed in the state. Some more anti-drone guns are being brought to the state by CRPF shortly," the police said.

"The state police has also started the process for procurement of an anti-drone system to enhance its security measures and tackle threats from drones effectively," the police said.

The Manipur Chief Minister's office had on two occasions raised concerns over the likelihood of weaponised drone attacks in the state, two letters sent by the Chief Minister's secretaries to the police chief and security agencies in the last seven months show.

The Manipur Police chief Rajiv Singh had visited Imphal West district's Kadangband and Koutruk on Sunday and Monday. He has been overseeing large-scale combing operations in the foothills. He spoke with villagers and assured them of security.

There are many villages of the Kuki tribes in the hills near the Meitei-dominated Imphal West area. The Kuki tribes and the Meiteis have been fighting since May 2023 over a range of issues such as land rights and political representation.

New Covid Subvariant Could Lead To Major Increase In Cases, Report Reveals

As it spreads quickly throughout Europe, a recently discovered Covid-19 subvariant called XEC is drawing the attention of health authorities globally. XEC was first discovered in Germany, but reports of it have since spread to the Netherlands and other parts of Western Europe. Physicians and scientists are keeping a close eye on XEC, as it appears that it may eventually overtake the current dominant subvariant, KP.3.1.1. Right now in the US, this subvariant is the most common strain.

According to a California-based physician speaking to the Los Angeles Times, XEC is "just getting started" and may take several weeks to months before it begins to significantly impact global and domestic case numbers. While XEC is "definitely taking charge" and appears to be the next prominent variant, experts caution that it will likely be months before it reaches high levels of prevalence.

Also Read | Explained: What Are FLiRT Covid Variants, Are They More Dangerous?

According to the Los Angeles Times, while XEC has shown up in the United States, its prevalence is low, and it is not being individually tracked on the US Centres for Disease Control and Prevention's variant tracker website. A lineage must be estimated to circulate above 1% nationally over a two-week period for it to be tracked.

The expected midyear wave began in May, when the winter's dominant subvariant, JN.1, gave way to a number of subvariants nicknamed FLiRT-a cheeky name based on the letters of two key mutations, F456L and R346T, Topol said.

Then, "the FLiRT eventually gave way to new variants that had even more growth advantage," Topol said.

3 Children, Sleeping Together In Fear Of Elephant Attack, Die Of Snake Bite

Three children who were sleeping together in fear of elephant attacks, died of snakebite in a village in Jharkhand's Garwah district, police said on Friday.

The incident happened in Chapkali village, under the jurisdiction of Chinia police station of the district, a police officer said.

Scared of elephant attacks, around 8 to 10 children of a family were sleeping on the floor of their tile home when the reptile, reportedly a Krait, sneaked into the house, situated in Nawanagar Tola, and bit the three on Thursday night, the police officer said.

Following the incident, the victims were taken to a sorcerer at around 1 am, where two of them died. The family members then took the third victim to a quack but she died on the way, the police officer said.

The children were identified as Pannalal Korwa (15), Kanchan Kumari (8), and Baby Kumari (9), the Officer-in-Chaarge of Chinia police station Neeraj Kumar said.

Meanwhile, the villagers are being forced to sleep in safe places owing to the prevailing elephant menace.

The pachyderms enter the human habitat in search of food.

Some villagers were compelled to sleep on the roof of school buildings or in groups at one place in the village, the locals claimed.

Private Chat No Longer Safe? Telegram To Moderate After CEO's France Arrest

In a covert upgrade, Telegram deleted an earlier guarantee that it wouldn't assist law enforcement in obtaining user data. The Verge revealed this modification on September 5, which raises questions about the platform's dedication to customer confidentiality. Contrary to WhatsApp and Signal, Telegram does not automatically encrypt conversations, which might put user information at risk.

The FAQ originally stated, "All Telegram chats and group chats are private amongst their participants. We do not process any requests related to them." However, this language has been replaced with instructions for reporting illegal content. The updated section now informs users that all Telegram apps have "Report" buttons, enabling users to flag inappropriate material quickly. Additionally, Telegram has provided an email address, abuse@telegram.org, for automated takedown requests. This update has hinted at the shifting landscape of online privacy as platforms like Telegram adapt their policies in response to legal pressures.

The Verge has reported Telegram spokesperson Remi Vaughn as saying the app's source code has not changed. "Private chats are still private too, although you could always report a new incoming chat to moderators by using Block > Report. Anyone can check Telegram's open source code and see there were no changes."

CEO Pavel Durov issued his first public statement since his arrest on Thursday evening and said, "Telegram's abrupt increase in user count to 950 million caused growing pains that made it easier for criminals to abuse our platform."

"That's why I made it my personal goal to ensure we significantly improve things in this regard. We've already started that process internally, and I will share more details on our progress with you very soon."

Brazilian Footballer, Once Teammates With Ronaldo, Joins OnlyFans

In what is the first venture into the industry by a prominent footballer, former Brazil international winger Douglas Costa has put up his own account on the website 'OnlyFans'. Costa, 33, announced his decision to join the website primarily used by adult content creators just days after joining Australian A-League club Sydney FC. Costa cited the platform's potential for global reach in his new decision. Once a serial league winner with European giants like Bayern Munich and Juventus, Costa was teammates with Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo for two seasons at the latter.

"As an OnlyFans creator, I will create exclusive content for my fans that they won't be able to see on any other social media, and it will make a great difference," said Costa through a press release sent to Australian news organisation The Sydney Morning Herald.

"I decided to join OnlyFans because I believe in the company's credibility and potential for global reach," he added.

Days after his former teammate Ronaldo shattered records on YouTube, gaining over 50 million subscribers in three days, Costa is trying his luck in another social media arena.

In fact, Ronaldo has been followed to YouTube by modern football stars like Jude Bellingham as well.

"The segment in which OnlyFans seeks to have athletes as brand ambassadors greatly impacts the market, and I am more than happy to be part of it, especially as one of the pioneers in the soccer segment," he said.

"I hope this partnership will be lasting and I can make my fans happy with my content," he stated.

In his prime, Costa was a dazzling winger who won three Bundesliga titles for Bayern Munich and three Serie A titles for Juventus. He also boasts 31 international caps for Brazil, for whom he has scored three goals. He was a part of his nation's 2018 FIFA World Cup squad.

Suspect Junior Officers Getting Messages From Outside Parties: SEBI

Amid reports of "toxic work culture" at Sebi, the capital markets regulator on Wednesday termed the claims of unprofessional work culture "misplaced".

It further said that HRA issues of staff are misguided by external elements.

The statement came in the backdrop of media reports suggesting that employees of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) had written a letter to the government on August 6, raising concerns over toxic work culture.

"The claims of unprofessional work culture in the letter dated August 6, 2024, are misplaced," Sebi said in a statement.

The regulator suspects that junior officers have been receiving messages from outside parties encouraging them to "go to the media, the Ministry, or the Board," possibly for the outsiders' own agendas.

"Sebi apprehends that the junior officers have been receiving messages from external elements outside their group, effectively instigating them to 'go to media, go to the Ministry, go to Board', perhaps to serve their own purpose. In fact, the letter of August 06, 2024, was not sent by the Sebi employee associations to the Government (and a section of the media)," the statement noted.

It was an anonymous email that was sent, and officers and associations have themselves condemned it and communicated the same to HRD through emails, the regulator said.

Does Anand Mahindra Own A Luxury Car? What The Industrialist Said

Industrialist Anand Mahindra has set the record straight on the vehicles he owns. His clarification came after a "fake" and "fabricated" story suggested he owned several foreign luxury cars. Mr Mahindra, a vocal advocate for "Make in India," said he only owned Mahindra & Mahindra vehicles, currently driving a Scorpio N.

The controversy began when an X user shared a post questioning why the Mahindra chairperson drove foreign-made vehicles instead of the ones made here. The post included a screenshot of an online article claiming Mahindra owned luxury cars such as Ferrari California T, Porsche 911, and Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.

In response, Mahindra said, "I was taught how to drive by my mother in her light sky-blue Premier car, which she nicknamed 'BlueBird.' Since joining Mahindra in 1991, I have exclusively driven vehicles made by our company."

Also Read: "Kitne Scorpio The": Anand Mahindra's Witty Exchange Goes Viral

He drives a red Mahindra Scorpio N, a model built by his own company, and occasionally uses his wife's silver Mahindra XUV 700, the Mahindra & Mahindra chairperson said.

The 69-year-old also addressed the photo showing him in front of a foreign car. He clarified that the photo was taken at the Monterey Car Week during the launch of Mahindra's Battista electric hypercar. The car in the photo, a classic Cisitalia, was designed by Pininfarina, a company owned by Mahindra.

Hormazd Sorabjee, editor of Autocar India, also defended Mahindra, confirming that he had only driven Mahindra vehicles for the past three decades. “It's not just made-in-India, it's made-in-Mahindra for Anand Mahindra who has owned & driven ONLY a Mahindra for the last 30+ years. He is absolutely true to his brand,” Mr Sorabjee tweeted.

Anand Mahindra also shared the list of every car he has owned and driven, starting from his mother's light sky-blue Premier car (earlier known as Fiat). He then drove a soft-top Mahindra CJ3 UV, followed by a Hindustan Motors Contessa after joining Mahindra & Mahindra.

When the hard-top Armada was produced, he switched to it, and over the years, he has owned and used a Bolero, Scorpio Classic, XUV 5OO, and currently drives a Red Scorpio N. Since the Armada, he has never owned or used any car of another brand, he stated.

Video: Baby In Plastic Crate Carried By Men In Neck-Deep Andhra Flood Waters

Two men wading through neck-deep water, carrying a baby in a plastic crate - this was one of the scores of distressing scenes inflicted by the deluge in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

The high-angle shot shows the infant in a yellow plastic crate placed on a foam board as the men trudged through the muddy waters in Andhra Pradesh's Vijaywada.

The family had to move the baby out of their house as the floodwaters turned roads into rivers and waterlogged homes in the Singh Nagar locality like almost every other area in the city.

Another video showed more than 200 cars - many of them luxury SUVs- submerged in the floodwaters in the city.

As of Tuesday, 323 trains were cancelled in Vijayawada, 170 diverted and 12 partially cancelled.

The torrential floods have killed 27 people in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana and damaged properties with lakhs rescued and taken to relief camps. Many industries have also suffered massive losses due to the heavy rains.

The Indian Air Forces has flown in hundreds of rescue officers and tonnes of emergency aid to both states.

Rains cause widespread destruction every year, but experts say climate change is shifting weather patterns and increasing the number of extreme weather events.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said he was undertaking surprise inspections in the flood-affected areas and directly taking feedback from the people through the Interactive Voice Response System (IVRS) mode.

"People are undergoing hardships. Snakes and scorpions are even entering upper floor residences. I am conducting IVRS and receiving information that food is not reaching some places. Rise up to the occasion and work with humanity," said Mr Naidu.

Be Humble, Sympathetic: Abhishek Banerjee's Advice To Party Amid Public Fury

Trinamool's second-in-command Abhishek Banerjee has issued a warning to party leaders: Do not to speak ill of anyone from the medical fraternity or civil society. The message on X comes amid multiple ugly comments by party leaders since his aunt and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had apparently urged them to "hiss". The Chief Minister has denied making any such comment, but that has apparently not convinced any of her party leaders.

"Public representatives across party lines need to be more HUMBLE and SYMPATHETIC. I urge everyone in @AITCofficial not to speak ill of anyone from the MEDICAL FRATERNITY OR CIVIL SOCIETY," the Diamond Harbour MP said. "Everyone has the right to protest and express themselves. This is what sets West Bengal apart from other BJP-ruled states," he added.

On Sunday, Atish Sarkar, husband of a TMC councillor at Habra, had lashed out at protestors. "I will make a distorted picture of your mother and sister and hang it on the door of your house. You will not be able to leave your house," he said.

"Remember, our Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee advised us to hiss at times. If we start hissing, you will not be able to come out of your houses," he was heard saying at a public meeting in his locality. After the video was widely circulated, the party had suspended him.

The same day, four-time Trinamool MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, who is also a medical practitioner, issued a statement apologising for her recent derogatory remarks about women doctors that infuriated the medical community.

At a panel discussion on the horrific rape-murder of a doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College in a vernacular television channel, the MP had claimed during her days as a medical student, there was a trend where female students secured qualifying marks by "sitting on the lap" of teaching doctors. She also said the students who often protested against that were granted lesser marks.

She had added that she never imagined the "trend" would ultimately take such a "nasty shape".

Actor-turned Trinamool MLA Kanchan Mullick questioned whether protesting junior doctors would refuse to accept their salaries and bonuses. "I just want to ask whether people who are on ceasework and opposing the ruling party are accepting their salaries and bonuses? Will people from my fraternity withdraw the awards conferred on them by the state government?" he said at a protest meet organised by the party in Konnagar.

In another video that was widely circulated on Sunday, a minister of the state, Udayan Guha, is purportedly heard asking party workers to retaliate against political adversaries.

"Some political parties are trying to do politics over the RG Kar incident. If they sting once, we will have to sting five times. If they leave a single tooth-mark, we will have to leave five teeth-marks," he is purportedly heard saying.

Trinamool's Bankura MP Arup Chakraborty said once party workers take a stand and "hiss", those who are protesting against the rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Hospital and "misleading people", will "flee like dogs".

All of it is apparently a take-off on something the Chief Minister had said a recent meeting last week. But on August 29, Ms Banerjee clarified the remark on X.

"I also clarify that the phrase ("phonsh kara") that I had used in my speech yesterday is a quote from Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa. The legendary saint had said that occasionally there is a need to raise one's voice. When there are crimes and criminal offences, a voice of protest has to be raised. My speech on that point was a direct allusion to the great Ramakrishnite saying," her post read.

The comments by the party leaders, though, have infuriated the medical community as well as the civil society, who have been on a massive protest over the rape-murder. Despite the Supreme Court's request to stop the protest and return to work, the doctors have stuck to their course of action.

In Viral Pak Army Mock Interview, Bizarre 'Katrina Kaif' Question

A mock interview of Pakistan's military exam for the selection of officers went viral on social media after the interviewer asked a candidate a question which featured Bollywood actor Katrina Kaif.

Sarmad Muhammad Khan, a former Pakistan Army officer who runs the 'World Times Forces Academy', asked the candidate, Ali Abbas, "Who is your favourite actress?" The candidate said Dur-e-Fishan Saleem, a Pakistani actress, followed by further questions on why he likes her.

A few minutes later, Mr Khan asked Mr Abbas, "Who is your favourite actress in Bollywood?" The candidate said, "Sir, Katrina Kaif."

Mr Khan gave the candidate a situation where "India is planning an attack on Pakistan, and Katrina Kaif has the information on how we (Pakistan) can stop them. She asked you to make some sort of relationship with her to get the information...Will you do it?" The candidate said, "Sir, obviously for the country's protection, I have to do it."

To his counter, the interviewer told the candidate "The situation is similar, but you are in Afghanistan and a person named Gul Khan asked you to do the same to get the information, will you do you now?" The candidate asked, "What kind of relationship?" Mr Khan admonished the candidate and said, "Is this your character?" Mr Khan then gave feedback the Mr Abbas, explaining the flaws in his responses.

The interviewer asked the follow-up question at the end of the interview. The two clips have been combined in the now-viral video.

Several users of X and Instagram have reacted to the video, mocking Mr Khan's line of questioning. Some users from Pakistan recalled their experience of giving the ISSB interview and shared how it "feels relatable to them".

The Inter-Services Selection Board (ISSB) is a personality assessment exam for the selection of commissioned officers into the Pakistan Army, Navy and Air Force, similar to the procedure in India, where candidates who want to join the forces as officers undergo the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview before joining the military training academy.

The video has over 89,000 views on YouTube, and the channel 'World Times CSS Videos' has over 3.3 lakh subscribers. The candidate, Ali Abbas, was giving a mock interview for the Pakistan Military Academy's 119 Long Course.

Won't Sit Quietly Till Maharashtra Government Is Changed: Sharad Pawar

NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar on Sunday said the opposition won't sit quietly till the Mahayuti dispensation in Maharashtra is dislodged from power in the next two months and a new government is formed on the ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji.

Addressing party workers at Ghatkopar in Mumbai, Mr Pawar slammed the state government over the collapse of the statue of the legendary warrior king in Sindhudurg district on August 26.

He said those in power in the state have no "faith" in Shivaji Maharaj. The ruling Mahayuti comprises BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and NCP headed by Ajit Pawar.

"I assure you (party workers) that if you show your unity, then we will not sit quietly till the government in Maharashtra is changed in the next two months and a new government is formed on the ideals of Shivaji Maharaj that will safeguard the interests of people," Mr Pawar said.

The collapse of the 35-foot Shivaji statue at Rajkot fort in Malvan tehsil has triggered a firestorm in the state, with the opposition targeting the Mahayuti for "corruption" and "insult" to the icon.

Besides Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and other state leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also apologised over the incident.

Mr Pawar said there are allegations of corruption while constructing the statue but he has no evidence about it.

"But how does a statue collapse? This means the quality of the statue deteriorated. Shivaji had never been insulted the way he was under this government," Mr Pawar said.

The government says a new statue will be constructed but what about the damage that was done, he asked.

The NCP (SP) chief said "wrong and corrupt decisions" were taken while constructing the statue.

Earlier in the day, Mr Pawar joined a protest march by the opposition bloc Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) from Hutatma Chowk to the Gateway of India in south Mumbai over the statue collapse.

Elections to the 288-member Maharashtra assembly will likely be held in October or November.

Attacking the Centre over the lateral entry scheme, which had triggered a political row recently, Mr Pawar said the one in power won't safeguard people's interests.
