Army Officer Injured In "Likely Grenade Accident" In J&K's Rajouri

An Army officer has been injured in a "likely grenade accident" at a post in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri sector on Thursday, the Indian Army has said. 

The officer is being treated and his condition is stable. The Army said further investigation of the incident is in progress.

6 Soldiers Among 19 Dead In Sikkim Disaster, 103 Missing: 10 Points

1. The state government has asked tourists not to come to Sikkim at the moment. The government also issued an advisory over the possibility of explosives and ammunition washed away from an army camp in the flash floods.
2. The Power Ministry said it will make a detailed assessment of damage to hydropower projects in Sikkim after the flood water recedes.
3. The state-owned hydropower giant NHPC is taking all possible measures to get the hydropower projects operational at the earliest, the ministry said, adding they are continuously monitoring the situation arising out of flash floods in the Teesta basin.
4. Due to flash floods in the Teesta basin on the intervening night of October 3 and 4, all the bridges downstream to Teesta-V hydropower station up to Tarkhola and Pamphok have been submerged or washed away.
5. Presently, the power station is under shutdown and not generating electricity. NHPC has timely evacuated manpower from all its projects and ensured that they are shifted to safer places.
6. The state administration has requested those stranded in the flood-hit Mangan district not to panic as the authorities would start an evacuation process from Friday.
7. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) platoons are also ready in North Sikkim to start the evacuation process for the local people.
8. Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang visited Singtam, one of the worst affected areas, and reviewed the situation. "Our dedicated teams are working day and night to address the immediate concerns and challenges posed by this calamity. I urge the administration, local authorities, all organisations, and individuals to join hands in a spirit of solidarity and cooperation," Mr Tamang said.
9. The flash floods destroyed 11 bridges in the state, of which eight bridges were washed away in Mangan district alone. Two bridges were destroyed in Namchi and one in Gangtok. Water pipelines, sewage lines and 277 houses, both kuchcha and concrete, have been destroyed in four districts.
10. The flash flood in the Teesta river, triggered by a cloudburst in Lhonak Lake in North Sikkim, caused an accumulation of a huge quantity of water, which turned towards Chungthang dam, destroying the power infrastructure before moving downstream in spate, flooding towns and villages.

"India Is A Powerful Country, Growing Stronger Under PM Modi": Putin

Heaping praise on India, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that the Indian leadership is "self-directed" and led by the country's national interests, according to Reuters. Speaking at an event, Vladimir Putin alleged that the West is trying to cast everyone "who is not ready to blindly follow these Western elites as the enemy".

"At a certain point in time, they tried to do the same with India. Now they are flirting, of course. We all understand this very well. We feel and see the situation in Asia. Everything is clear. I want to say that the Indian leadership is self-directed. It is led by the national interests. I think that those attempts make no sense. But, they continue. They are trying to cast Arabs as the enemy. They are trying to be careful, but overall, that's what it all boils down to," Vladimir Putin said.

The Russian President said countries such as India, Brazil and South Africa deserve more representation in the UN Security Council and added that the UN should be reformed but gradually, according to Reuters.

Calling India a "powerful country", Vladimir Putin said that it is growing stronger and stronger under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Russia-based RT News reported.

"...India, more than 1.5 billion of population, more than 7 per cent of economic growth...that's a powerful country, mighty country. And it's growing stronger and stronger under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi...," Vladimir Putin said, according to a video shared by RT News.

Earlier on Wednesday, Vladimir Putin had called PM Modi a "very wise man", adding that India is making great strides in development under his leadership, RT reported.

Last month, too, he had praised PM Modi stating he was doing the "right thing" in promoting the Make in India programme.

Man In China Dies After Drinking 1 Litre Alcohol To Win Rs 2 Lakh

A man in China died after he drank a litre of strong liquor in just 10 minutes during a work drinking contest to win a 20,000 yuan (Rs Rs 2,28,506) prize, South China Morning Post.  The incident happened in July when the man, identified as Zhang, attended his office's team-building dinner, where his boss organised a drinking competition. His boss pledged a 20,000 yuan reward for anyone who could outdrink Zhang.

"After Zhang gave his toast at Yang's table, the latter openly proposed a reward of 5,000 yuan to anyone who could drink more than him," one of Zhang's colleagues said. When no one responded he increased the amount to 10,000 yuan (Rs 1.15 lakh). 

Zhang then asked about the stakes if he won the contest and his boss Yang told him he would be awarded 20,000 yuan. However, if he lost, he was asked to pay 10,000 yuan to treat the whole company to afternoon tea.

Yang later chose several employees, including his own driver, to compete against Zhang. According to one of the employees who was at the dinner, Zhang downed a litre of baiju within 10 minutes. Notably, Baijiu is a Chinese spirit with a typical alcohol content of between 30% to 60%.

Zhang was soon rushed to the hospital after he collapsed. As per the hospital's critical condition notice, he was diagnosed with severe alcohol poisoning, aspiration pneumonia, suffocation, and cardiac arrest. He died on August 3. 

After his death, a representative announced in the company's WeChat group that the company would be closed down. Shenzhen police are now investigating the incident.

Recently, there have been similar incidents where people lost their lives to alcohol poisoning. In May this year, a Chinese social media influencer died less than 12 hours after consuming seven bottles of Baijiu on Douyin, China's version of TikTok. Another popular live-streamer and influencer in China also died in June after gulping down copious amounts of potent liquor.

The influencer named Zhong Yuan Huang Ge died on June 2 after binging excessive amounts of Baijiu, during a viral drinking challenge. Both these deaths sparked huge scrutiny of the safety and regulations of such apps.
