US Woman Mistakenly Given Abortion Pills Instead Of IVF Hormones

In a shocking case of medical negligence, a woman in the US undergoing In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) was given abortion medication by her local pharmacy,  which resulted in the death of her two unborn babies, Fox News reported. 

''They just killed my baby. Both my babies, because I transferred two embryos,'' Tamika Thomas told 8 News Now. As per the outlet, the Las Vegas resident -- a mother of four, wanted to have one more baby in 2019 as she and her husband wanted a big family. She and her husband opted for IVF after she had her Fallopian tubes removed following two ectopic pregnancies. Notably, IVF is a complex procedure where fertilised embryos are implanted into the uterus to achieve a successful pregnancy. 

As part of the procedure, her doctor prescribed a vaginal suppository in place of the injections. However, when she went to North Las Vegas CVS, pharmacy technicians gave her Misoprostol instead, which is used for ''medication abortion.'' However, Mrs Thomas experienced severe cramping after taking the wrong medication.

"My cramping went beyond that," she said. "It was extreme. It was painful," she told 8 News Now.

After the harrowing incident, she filed a complaint against the CVS Pharmacy with the Nevada State Board of Pharmacy. Investigation revealed that the pharmacy had made a series of mistakes. First, they couldn't read the doctor's handwriting, so they guessed the prescription and gave her Misoprostol. Further, the pharmacists also didn't explain how to take medication and what to expect.

Reviewing the medication is a standard protocol according to a report in Pharmacy Times.

''It (the error) would have been caught because then they would have had to have the medicine in their hand. And they would have said, ‘Oh, this is Misoprostol or Cytotek, have you taken this before?'', Ms Thomas said. 

As a result, the two pharmacists were fined and put on probation for a year, while the pharmacy was given a maximum fine of $10,000 when the board met in September, 8 News Now reported.

In their statement, the pharmacy said, ''We've apologised to our patient for the prescription incident that occurred in 2019 and have cooperated with the Nevada Board of Pharmacy in this matter. The health and well-being of our patients are our number one priority and we have comprehensive policies and procedures in place to support prescription safety. Prescription errors are very rare, but if one does occur, we take steps to learn from it in order to continuously improve quality and patient safety.''

However, four years later, Ms Thomas said she is still reeling from the loss and said the apology will ''never be good enough." 

"All I got was sorry," she said.

Gunmen At Door, Bodies On Road: Hamas' Sabbath Attack Shocks Israel

Bloodied bodies in the streets, gunmen raiding door-to-door, and news of captives taken to Gaza left Israelis terrified and in shock, after the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched a surprise attack that was unprecedented in audacity and scale.

A resident reported seeing multiple bodies and bullet-scarred vehicles in the southern Israeli town of Sderot where groups of Hamas gunmen were still fighting Israeli troops 12 hours after the attack was launched.

"I went out, I saw loads of bodies of terrorists, civilians, cars shot up. A sea of bodies, inside Sderot along the road, other places, loads of bodies," said Shlomi from Sderot.

As night fell, at least 100 were reported dead and more than 1,000 wounded, according to Israeli media, with fighting still raging in more than 20 locations around the Gaza Strip.

The assault, on the Jewish Sabbath and coinciding with the religious holiday of Simchat Torah, is unfolding as a major national trauma in a country proud of its strong military.

In one incident, young Israelis told of fleeing a dance party in the early hours of Saturday as Hamas gunmen backed by rocket barrages entered towns and villages by the border.

The rave party was attended by several hundred people near the Israeli kibbutz of Reim, witnesses said. Footage on social media showed dozens of people running through fields and along a road, escaping militants as gunshots were heard.

"The music stopped and there was a rocket siren," a young woman called Ortal told Israel's N12 News television. "Suddenly out of nowhere, they started shooting."

Another party-goer, Esther Borochov, said a car had rammed her vehicle as she tried to flee before a young man told her and her friend to jump into his vehicle before he was shot point blank while she played dead until she was rescued.

"I couldn't move my legs," she told Reuters at the hospital. "Soldiers came and took us away to the bushes."

Israel's ambulance service said its crews were unable to reach the wounded in towns where fighting was ongoing. An ambulance was also attacked, Magen David Adom medical service said, and one crew member was killed, it said.

The assaults on Israeli civilians were the deadliest since the Palestinian suicide bombing campaigns of the Second Intifada that hit the country's main cities some two decades ago.

Adding to the shock, Palestinian militant groups circulated footage on social media showing what they said were captured Israeli soldiers and civilians being driven into Gaza and hostages being held by more fighters inside Israel.

Israeli TV stations carried telephone calls from terrified residents of towns and kibbutzes speaking even as gunmen were trying to break into their shelters.

A woman identified as Ella barricaded in a bomb shelter for hours in Be'eri kibbutz, where there were reports of 50 Israelis held hostage by Hamas, spoke live with N12 News.

"We can hear a lot of gunfire, we were told that terrorists are in the dining hall, we can hear a lot of shooting," she said. "I've lost contact with my family. I know my father has been kidnapped ... no one is telling us what's going on. I don't know if my mother is alive."

"It's Captain's Team...": Dravid's Blunt Take Ahead Of India's WC Opener

Rahul Dravid has done his bit as the coach of the Indian cricket team. After preparing his players for the grandest arena of their career, he now wants to retreat to the backstage and let Rohit Sharma's bunch create their own beautiful story. "Honestly once the game starts, it's the captain's team. It's the team that needs to take it forward, they need to execute it, they need to do the job," Dravid said during his interaction with the media on Friday.

"As a coach I see my work in the lead up to the games, in the lead up to this World Cup, trying to get the squad we got eventually. Building up the team, building up the squad and then hoping to allow the players to play and express themselves to have fun,” said Dravid, who is known for his economy of emotions.

Controlling the controllables is Dhoni's favourite phrase but no one believes in it more than Dravid.

"Yeah... I mean I guess you recognise as a coach that once the game starts, once the guys cross the line, there is only so much you can do. As coaches, we don't score a single run or take a single wicket in the tournament. All we can do is really support the players.” 

The job of a coach requires honesty in assessment, something that Dravid keeps in his head always.

"A lot of our work, to be very honest with you, is in the days leading up to these games. It's in the practice sessions, hopefully the kind of mind space we get the people in and supporting the captain and the team in whatever way we can in the lead up," he said.

Asked what could be a safe total in the tournament, Dravid gave a tongue in cheek reply.

“Just one more than the opposition, I think will be very safe [laughs]. Look, it's hard to tell, hard to predict, in each condition. And that's going to be the beauty of this World Cup,” he said.

Dravid was essentially hinting at the variety in venues and pitches during this tournament.

“So many venues that these matches are going to be played in. So many different wickets on those venues. Some of the squares…even in India, you have red soil, black soil, you have a mix of red and black.

“Each one is going to be unique. I don't think you can go and say that this is going to be a safe total, that's not going to be a safe total,” he said.

Supplementing his logic, Dravid said: “We'll probably play on a relatively bigger ground here in Chennai compared to say when we go to Bangalore or when we go to Delhi. Each venue will be different, we'll just have to assess and see what it's luck.” So, did he watch Rachin Ravindra's blazing hundred against England on Thursday? “Yeah, bits and pieces of it. I thought both of them (Ravindra and Devon Conway) played really well. Obviously, they got New Zealand off to a really flying start in the tournament and looked like the wicket really became a good one as the game went on.” 

2007 World Cup looks ancient

The 2007 World Cup wasn't his finest hour and Dravid said it was in his past life. "It's a long time since I was a player. I almost forgot that I was actually a cricket player at one stage to be very honest with you," the smile was a bit self-deprecating.

"I have moved on from that. I don't think of myself as a player anymore. Maybe that's the mind space difference... I'm focussed on helping the group to do the best they can.

"I mean in the end that's the job of the support staff, the job of the coach really is to support the vision of the captain and help him execute his vision over the course of the next couple of months and hope we can do that really well."

Search For Lost Earring Leads To Discovery Of Viking Treasure In Norway

After a man made a record-breaking gold discovery in Norway with a metal detector, a family in the country made another unprecedented discovery with the same device. The family was searching for a lost earring in their garden when they instead unearthed artefacts dating back more than a millennium.

According to the BBC, the Aasvik family dug up a bowl-shaped buckle and another item that appear to be part of a Viking-era burial. Experts believe the artefacts were used in the ninth-century burial of a woman on the small island of Jomfruland. The discovery was made under a large tree in the centre of the family's garden on the island, off Norway's south coast.

"We congratulate the family who found the first safe Viking-time find at Jomfruland," the Cultural Heritage of Vestfold and Telemark County Council wrote in a Facebook post.

Live Science reported that the new discovery of what seems to be the grave of an aristocratic Viking woman now suggests that the cairns were, in fact, made by Vikings.

The larger artefact found in the grave is an oval-shaped brooch that would have been worn by a woman in a halter dress to fasten the shoulder straps at the front, Vibeke Lia, an archaeologist with the Vestfold and Telemark County Council, told Live Science. Such brooches were commonly found in the graves of Viking women, and their style was characteristic of the ninth century, according to the news outlet.

"They come in pairs, one for each strap, so there should be another one there," she said.
