Medieval Ring Engraved With Love Motto Found In UK By Metal Detectorist
In an ordinary field in the United Kingdom, a metal detectorist made an exciting discovery dating back to the Middle Ages. According to the BBC, the detectorist discovered a gold mediaeval ring engraved with a beautiful declaration of love in an ordinary field in North Essex. "Je desir vous Ceruir," reads the ring in French. It translates to "I desire to serve you," said historian Lori Rogerson.
According to the outlet, the ring was found within 50 meters of a Tudor silver-gilt hooked tag by the same detectorist near Frinton, Essex. Ms Rogerson, who is the county's finds liaison officer, believes that both items were probably lost at the same time.
The gold ring was found in a cracked condition and is pretty small, with a diameter of merely 9.4 millimetres, and a width of 3.9 millimetres. Ms Rogerson said that despite being so "tiny it only fits my little finger," it was probably worn by a man. "At this period rings were worn on all the joints of all the fingers, so it could have been worn on the upper joint," she said.

Rings engraved with French chivalric mottos were fashionable between 1400 and 1500, the BBC reported. It added that descriptions such as "I desire to serve you" and "I wish to obey you" were often used by men wishing to serve their ladies as part of a courtly love tradition that swept across medieval Europe. The outlet also reported that the inscription is written in a type of French that was used in England at the time.
According to Ms Rogerson, anyone who could afford a fold ring at this time would have been among the elite who knew French.
The ring and the silver tag were discovered by the same detectorist, although on two separate occasions. Ms Rogerson said as the ring was battered and cracked and the hooked tag damaged, it may have belonged to the same person who was taking them to be recycled at the time they were lost.
The tags were probably used in the Tudor era by women to hold up one layer of skirt from another so both can be seen, the outlet reported.

In KCR's Telangana Poll Manifesto, A Direct Attack On Congress Promises
In Telangana, which is going to the polls next month, Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao released his party's election manifesto that tries to one-up the Congress, which announced six guarantees if voted to power.
KCR's party, the BRS, has decided to increase the amount farmers receive as direct cash transfers under the Rythu Bandhu scheme - a welfare programme that supports the farmers' investments for two crops a year. Farmers who now get Rs 10,000 a year per acre will get Rs 16,000 a year per acre in a staggered manner, starting with an extra Rs 2000 in 2024.
The Congress has promised Rs 15,000 per year per acre to not just farmers who own land but also to tenant farmers.
Aasra, or old age and widow pension, will go up to Rs 5,000 from the current Rs 2,016 in a phased manner. Beneficiaries will get Rs 3,000 in the next year.
Similarly, the pension for the disabled will be raised to Rs 6,000 in a staggered manner over five years.
All families below the poverty line, which is around 93 lakh households in the state, will be covered under a risk insurance scheme on the lines of the Rythu Bima Scheme with a payout of Rs 5 lakh in cases of deaths.
These families will also get Rs 15 lakh for hospital treatments, fine rice as part of their monthly ration, and gas cylinders at Rs 400 per cylinder. The Congress, looking to wrest power in the state, has offered to provide cylinders at Rs 500 per cylinder.
The poll promises will be implemented within six months of coming to power, KCR said.
The Chief Minister today also issued B-forms to 69 candidates though he had announced 115 candidate names in August. A few changes have been made to the list.
Mynampally Hanumantha Rao, who was given a BRS ticket from Malkajgiri before he switched to Congress, has been replaced by Marri Rajasekhar Reddy.
Telangana will vote on November 30 to elect 119 legislators to the state assembly. The votes will be counted on December 3.

Man Recorded Wife's Phone Calls Without Permission. What Court Said
The Chhattisgarh High Court has ruled that recording the mobile phone conversation of a person without her knowledge amounts to the violation of the right to privacy under Article 21 and set aside a family court's order.
The HC observed that the husband recording his wife's phone conversation without her knowledge amounts to a violation of her right to privacy and also the right of the petitioner guaranteed under Article 21 of the constitution.
The high court was hearing a petition moved by a woman challenging a family court's order allowing her husband's application in a maintenance case pending since 2019.
The woman, 38, had moved an application for a grant of maintenance from her husband, 44, in the family court in Mahasamund district.
The husband moved the family court seeking re-examination of his wife on the ground that certain conversation was recorded on the mobile phone and he wants to cross-examine the petitioner and confront her with the conversation recorded on the mobile phone.
The family court in an order dated October 21, 2021, allowed the man's application, following which the woman approached the High Court in 2022 challenging the family court's order, her lawyer Vaibhav A. Goverdhan said.
The husband was trying to prove before the family court through mobile conversation that his wife was committing adultery and hence he need not have to pay maintenance to her once they are divorced, he said.
During the hearing in the HC, the woman's counsel submitted that the family court had committed an error of law by allowing the application as it infringed on the right of privacy of the petitioner, and without her knowledge, the conversation was recorded by her husband and the same cannot be used against her.
He quoted some judgments passed by the Supreme Court and the High Court of Madhya Pradesh.
On October 5, High Court Justice Rakesh Mohan Pandey set aside the verdict of the family court.
"It appears that the respondent (husband) has recorded the conversation of the petitioner (wife) without her knowledge behind her back which amounts to the violation of her right to privacy and also the right of the petitioner guaranteed under article 21 of the constitution of India," the HC noted.
"Further, the right of privacy is an essential component of the right to life envisaged by article 21, therefore, in the opinion of this court, the learned family court has committed an error of law in allowing the application under section 311 of the CrPC along with the certificate issued under section 65 of the Indian Evidence Act. Accordingly, the order passed by the learned family court is hereby set aside," it added.
