Food Cart Owners, Helper Found Dead In Delhi Home: Cops

Three people were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Dwarka's Dabri area here on Saturday evening, police said.

Of the three, two - Sonu and Amit - were siblings, while the identity of the third is yet to be ascertained, they said.

According to police, Sonu and Amit, both from Uttar Pradesh's Bareilly, were staying in a rented accommodation in Dabri and used to run a 'chhole bhature' vend in the locality.

Prima facie, it appears that the third man was a helper at their shop, an officer said.

"On Saturday evening, Sonu and Amit and one unidentified person were found lying dead in their house," a police officer said.

All three were aged between 25 and 30 years, the officer said, adding that a mini LPG gas knob was found turned on in the house, but the cause of the death is yet to be established.

The three men had also consumed liquor late at night, the officer said.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination and inquest proceedings are being conducted, another officer said.

The officer said a team of forensic science laboratory (FSL) was also called to the spot to gather evidence.

Cancer Cases To Jump 77% By 2050, Driven By Lifestyle And Environment: WHO

The World Health Organization's cancer agency, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), issued a stark warning today: new cancer diagnoses are projected to skyrocket by 77% by 2050, reaching over 35 million cases annually. This alarming increase is attributed to a combination of lifestyle and environmental factors, with tobacco, alcohol, obesity, and air pollution identified as the key culprits.

WHO also published survey results from 115 countries, showing a majority of countries do not adequately finance priority cancer and palliative care services as part of universal health coverage (UHC).

The global cancer burden is projected to surge by 77% to over 35 million new cases in 2050, stemming from population growth, aging, and changing risk factors associated with socioeconomic development. Tobacco, alcohol, and obesity play pivotal roles alongside persistent air pollution. High Human Development Index (HDI) countries anticipate the greatest absolute increase (4.8 million cases), while low HDI nations face a striking 142% rise and medium HDI countries a 99% increase in cancer incidence by 2050. Cancer mortality in low- and medium-HDI countries is expected to nearly double. Urgent global efforts are imperative to address this escalating crisis.

"The impact of this increase will not be felt evenly across countries with different HDI levels. Those who have the fewest resources to manage their cancer burdens will bear the brunt of the global cancer burden," says Dr Freddie Bray, Head of the Cancer Surveillance Branch at IARC.

"Despite the progress that has been made in the early detection of cancers and the treatment and care of cancer patients, significant disparities in cancer treatment outcomes exist not only between high and low-income regions of the world but also within countries. Where someone lives should not determine whether they live. Tools exist to enable governments to prioritise cancer care and ensure that everyone has access to affordable, quality services. This is not just a resource issue but a matter of political will," says Dr Cary Adams, head of the UICC (Union for International Cancer Control).

"Government's 10-Year Report Card": Minister Hardeep Puri On Interim Budget

Union Minister Hardeep Puri termed the interim Budget a “ten-year report card” of the Union Government. “This is an interim budget, a vote on account. The government has come with a ten-year report card showing that it put out a sterling performance in every front,” Mr Puri told NDTV.

Calling the last budget before the general elections "ambitious", he said: “But more than anything, the existing schemes get added up. We had four crore beneficiaries under the PM housing scheme, today they have added another two crores. If this is not ambition in an interim budget then what is? They have another one crore to the target of two crore lakhpati didis.”

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, while presenting her sixth budget in a row, said that the government would increase housing in the next five years, expand free electricity and improve medical care. She said another two crore houses will be constructed under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) in the next five years. The PMAY(G) is a social welfare programme to provide housing for the rural poor in the country.

"Despite the challenges due to COVID-19, the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) continued, and we are close to achieving the target of three crore houses," she said, adding, "Two crore more houses will be taken up in the next five years to meet the requirement arising from the increase in the number of families".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the scheme in 2015 with the goal of "Housing for All."

The Budget also mentioned a to-be-launched housing scheme for the "deserving sections" of the middle class that would benefit those "living in rented houses or slums or chawls or unauthorised colonies to buy or build their own houses."

“I was delighted. It is going to be an ambitious scheme. I think we should wait for the rollout to happen. But, I think it's going to be a plus plus. This needs to be fleshed out,” said Mr Puri

Nirmala Sitharaman, during her 56-minute Budget speech, also enhanced the target of 'Lakhpati Didi' scheme from two crore to three crore, a step aimed at empowering women in the rural areas.  "83 lakh SHGs (self-help groups) with nine crore women are transforming the rural socio-economic landscape with empowerment and self-reliance. Buoyed by the success, it has been decided to enhance the target of lakhpati didi from 2 crore to 3 crore," she informed.

The Lakhpati Didi initiative, aimed at training women in self-help groups so that they can earn a sustainable income of at least Rs 1 lakh per annum per household - was announced by PM Modi from the ramparts of Red Fort in his Independence Day address last year.
India will reduce its budget gap sharply in 2024-25 to 5.1% of gross domestic product (GDP), Nirmala Sitharaman told parliament as she presented the Budget, while revising the current fiscal year's gap lower by 10 basis points to 5.8%.

No change was proposed in the tax rates in the interim budget with Ns Sitharaman announcing that the government will form a high-powered committee for an extensive consideration of the challenges arising from the fast population and that it will present a white paper on the economic performance of 10 years of BJP-led government compared to previous 10 years of Congress-led UPA government.
