On CCTV, Cops Seen Planting Drugs On Man In Mumbai, Suspended After Probe

Four cops were suspended today in Mumbai, police said, after a video showed them allegedly planting drugs on a man went viral on social media. In the video, two officers can be seen frisking a man as two others can be seen standing a few steps away.

Moments later, one of the them slips something into the suspect's hip pocket, the video shows. The four men then take him into custody for possessing 20 grams of mephedrone.

After an investigation was launched, it was confirmed that all the four men seen in the video are police personnel posted at Khar Police Station in Mumbai.

Those suspended included a police sub-inspector and three constables, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone XI) Rajtilak Roshan told news agency PTI.

According to sources, the man searched by the officers and in whose pocket the drugs were planted was identified as Daniel. The four policemen, attached to the Anti-Terror Cell of the Khar police station, raided an open plot of land in Kalina area of the city on Friday evening and detained him.

While speaking to a local news channel, Daniel claimed that the cops initially threatened to frame him in a drugs case but when they realised that their act was caught on a CCTV camera, he was allowed to go.

DCP Rajtilak Roshan told news agency PTI that disciplinary action was initiated against the four cops for not following set procedure and after their suspected actions were seen in the video, they were suspended pending inquiry.

"They reached the spot after getting information about drugs, but everything (they did) is seen in the CCTV," he said.

An associate of Daniel alleged that he was targeted at the behest of a builder over a dispute regarding the plot where the incident took place.

RBI Governor On Two Factors That Pulled GDP Growth Rate Down

The slowing of India's economic growth to a 15-month low of 6.7 per cent in the April-June quarter was due to "lower" government spending in the wake of the enforcement of the model code of conduct for the recent Lok Sabha polls, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said on Saturday.

The RBI had projected a growth rate of 7.1 per cent for the April-June quarter of this fiscal.

"The Reserve Bank projected a growth rate of 7.1 per cent for the first quarter. However, the first advance estimation data released by the National Statistical Office showed the growth rate at 6.7 per cent," Governor Das said.

The components and main drivers responsible for the GDP growth like consumption, investment, manufacturing, services and construction have registered a growth of more than 7 per cent, he said.

Only two aspects have pulled the growth rate slightly down. Those are—government (both central and state) expenditure and agriculture, the RBI governor pointed out.

He said the government expenditure was low during the first quarter perhaps due to elections (April to June) and operation of model code of conduct by the Election Commission.

"We would expect the government expenditure to pick up in coming quarters and provide the required support to growth," Mr Das said.

Similarly, the agriculture sector has recorded a minimal growth rate of around 2 per cent in the April to June quarter. However, the monsoon was very good and spread all over India except a few areas. So, everyone is optimistic and positive about the agriculture sector, he noted.

"Under these circumstances, we have reasonably confident expectations that the annual growth rate of 7.2 per cent projected by the RBI will be materialized in coming quarters," the governor asserted.

Das said that GST, inflation targeting framework and Insolvency & Bankruptcy Code (IBC) are the three major reforms made during the past 10 years.

Addressing a national conference of chartered accountants (CAs) here, he said, “The primary functioning of the RBI, as defined in its preamble, is to maintain price stability, while keeping in mind the objective of growth. This was a major structural reform made by the government in 2016 by amending the RBI Act.” With this amendment, the RBI is mandated by the law to maintain the price stability with keeping the inflation at 4 per cent, with a leeway of 2 percentage points on either side, he said.

When Covid hit, the RBI reduced the repo rate by 250 basis points. Similarly, after the Ukraine war started, due to various international factors and some domestic weather events, the inflation rose to 7.8 per cent. So, at that time, the central bank had quickly increased the interest rate, he pointed out.

Stating that quality of audit in any organization is very important Das advised the CAs to do a true diagnosis of the health of a company like doctors.

Behind Telegram CEO's Arrest, A Paris Cybercrime Unit With Big Ambitions

The investigation into Telegram boss Pavel Durov that has fired a warning shot to global tech titans was started by a small cybercrime unit within the Paris prosecutor's office, led by 38-year-old Johanna Brousse.

The arrest of Durov, 39, last Saturday marks a significant shift in how some global authorities may seek to deal with tech chiefs reluctant to police illegal content on their platforms.

The arrest signalled the mettle of the J3 cybercrime unit, but the true test of its ambitions will be whether Brousse can secure a conviction based on a largely untested legal argument, lawyers said.

In an unprecedented move against a major tech CEO, prosecutors argued Durov bears responsibility for the alleged illegality on his platform, placing him under formal investigation on organized crime charges. He is suspected of complicity in running an online platform that allows the posting of child sex abuse images, drug trafficking and fraud.

Durov's lawyer said on Thursday it was "absurd" for him to be held responsible and that the app abided by European laws, echoing an earlier statement by Telegram itself.

Being placed under formal investigation in France does not imply guilt or necessarily lead to trial, but indicates judges consider there is enough evidence to proceed with the probe. Investigations can last years before being sent to trial or dropped. Durov is out on bail, but barred from leaving France.

Brousse's unit began investigating Durov earlier this year after seeing his app being used for countless alleged crimes, and growing frustrated by the "almost total lack of response from Telegram to judicial requests", Paris Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said on Wednesday.

Brousse declined to comment.

In an interview with newspaper Liberation in January, Brousse said her office was overseeing a growing number of probes involving Telegram and rival messaging app Discord, adding that tackling crime on them was "one of my battles".

Jason Citron, Discord's CEO, did not respond to a request for comment.

Brousse's J3 cybercrime unit is France's most important, with licence to prosecute nationwide. But it also is small, with just five prosecutors, well below the 55-60 cybercrime prosecutors in Switzerland, a 2022 parliamentary report found. With limited resources, they "prioritize the most serious crimes", Brousse told Le Figaro last year.

Brousse said in a 2022 podcast appearance she wanted to be tough "so cybercriminals believe that if they attack France, they will be judged and punished very severely".

"We want people to be prosecuted, either in their country ... or in France through arrest warrants," she said.

Her office was used to "extremely sensitive cases", she added. "Sometimes, legal and geopolitical issues intersect."

Patrick Perrot, who coordinates AI-assisted probes at the French gendarmerie and advises the Interior Ministry's cybercommand unit, said the J3 had been innovative in seeking to prosecute cases that set an international precedent.

"I think it shows that you can't do whatever you want with these platforms," he told Reuters. "It's a real question for the future, because these platforms won't stop multiplying, so the challenge of regulation is essential."

TOUGH LEGAL GROUND?

Brousse has led the J3 since 2020, which has given her oversight of one of the most important - and controversial - French cybercrime cases ever.

In late 2020, the J3 took charge of the probe into Sky ECC, which alongside Encrochat was one of the main encrypted communications services used by gangsters to buy drugs and weapons, or murder rivals. A few years earlier, French, Dutch and Belgian police had hacked into their servers, which were housed in northern France, giving French prosecutors jurisdiction over many of the resulting probes.

There have been more than 6,500 arrests since the takedown of Encrochat in 2020, according to Europol, with the legality of the intercepts challenged in appeals courts across Europe.

Paul Krusky, the Canadian Encrochat boss, was extradited in February from the Dominican Republic to France, where he now awaits trial. Lawyers for Sky ECC's Jean-François Eap are contesting his French arrest warrant.

Stephane Bonifassi, Eap's lawyer, said his client was innocent, adding that "Sky ECC was not conceived as a tool for criminals, nor commercialized as such".

Krusky's lawyer, Antoine Vey, said his client was innocent.

"The service set up by Paul Krusky, like other services that have enjoyed global success, was only intended to protect the privacy and freedom of exchange of its users, and in no case to support criminal activities," Vey said in a statement.

Two other French lawyers who have worked on Sky ECC and Encrochat cases told Reuters that these earlier probes gave prosecutors the ambition - and a blueprint - to target Durov.

Robin Binsard, who has fought Encrochat cases at France's top court, said prosecutors would need to prove that Durov knew and approved of the criminality on the app, calling their argument "totally questionable".

The fact that Telegram didn't comply with law enforcement requests "does not automatically make one an accomplice to a criminal project", he added.

Binsard said it was clear "France is pursuing encrypted messaging providers", and that other operators of such apps, such as Signal, "should be concerned about whether or not they are in compliance with French regulations. Because the message is clear if they are not, legal action will take place".

Signal did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

A source at the Paris prosecutor's office said the Sky ECC probe had no links to the Telegram investigation.

"Who Is Comparing Them?": Ex-Pak Star's Brutal Take On Virat-Babar Debate

There has been comparisons between Virat Kohli and Babar Azam for quite some time now and it is one of the debates that still remain quite popular among the cricket fans. While both batters had their fair share of ups and downs, the conversation over who is the better batter continues to rage even today. However, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria believes that there is no comparison between the two players and he thinks that Virat is clearly the superior player. In an interview with Sports Tak, Kaneria said that people should look at both of their records and it clearly shows that Virat is the better better.

“Who is comparing them? I am tired of hearing that people compare them. When you're talking about comparing, look at the runs Virat has scored. He has scored runs all around the world. He is a massive player,” Kaneria said.

Kaneria also said that the presence of Kohli is enough to have an impact on the field - something that Babar is currently missing. He added that the comparisons were mainly created by the media.

“Look at his stature, when he walks onto the field, his aura itself is different and he (Babar) does not come close, forget comparing them. All that is created by the channels to sell their product. I have had a lot of questions comparing them, but I have never done it. Look at the stats. When both of them retire, do take a look at the stats,” he mentioned.

Meanwhile, Kaneria said that India should not travel to Pakistan for the competition and insisted that Dubai will be the better venue.

"Looking at the situation in Pakistan, I have to say that the Indian team should not go to Pakistan, and Pakistan should think about it, and then the ICC will make its decision, and most likely, it will be a hybrid model, it will played in Dubai. The media gets hype, everyone's videos get likes because the big manjan is good so it will sell. So I think this is a reality and it will definitely be a hybrid model," he said.

"Want To Be Kohli Of Indian Badminton": Lakshya Sen's Monumental Remark

Indian badminton star Lakshya Sen impressed everyone with his performance at the Paris Olympics 2024 but he failed to secure the bronze medal by the smallest of margins. Lakshya became the first Indian male player to reach the badminton semi-finals at the Olympics but his dream of reaching the gold medal match was ended after a loss against top seed Viktor Axelsen. Lakshya faced Lee Zii Jia in the bronze medal match but he once again was defeated. Although he did not manage to add an Olympic medal to his name, his performance earned him a lot of praise and during a recent interaction, the youngster revealed his dream of becoming the "Virat Kohli of Indian badminton in coming years".

“Why not I mean, but again he's done a lot for Indian cricket. Yes I want to be the Virat Kohli of Indian badminton in coming years,” he said on the The Ranveer Show podcast.

Lakshya also opened up about his camaraderie with Tokyo and Paris gold medallist Viktor Axelsen. He said that he was inspired by Axelsen and they also trained together in Dubai.

“He has inspired me a lot, the way he conducts himself on and off the court. I had a two-week training period with him where I got to play with him and practice. Again, this Olympics semi final match against him. Yeah, again it has been quite inspiring for me that I played and I know in the match I had him. I had also beaten him in the past. These kind of things motivate me that yes I'm on the right track but again lot of work is there,” he added.

Earlier, Axelsen also was all praise for Lakshya and he even made a massive prediction.

"Lakshya is an amazing player. He has shown in this Olympics that he is a very, very strong competitor and I am sure in four years from now, he will be one of the favourites to win the gold. (He is) an amazing talent and a great guy and I wish him all the best,” Axelsen said.

Uruguayan Footballer Dies After Collapsing Mid-Game In Brazil

Uruguayan footballer Juan Izquierdo of the Nacional club died in Brazil Tuesday, five days after collapsing from a heart attack during a match against Sao Paolo, his team announced late Tuesday. The 27-year-old collapsed in the 84th minute of a match for a place in the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores -- the most prestigious club tournament in Latin America. He was taken by ambulance to the Albert Einstein Hospital, where physicians said he suffered "cardiac arrest of undetermined onset, secondary to an arrhythmia."

Izquierdo, who was sedated and on a ventilator, later suffered "a progression of brain involvement and an increase in intracranial pressure," the hospital said. "With the deepest pain and shock in our hearts, the Club Nacional de Football announces the death of our beloved player Juan Izquierdo," Nacional wrote on the social network X, in a message accompanied by a black and white photograph of the athlete. Izquierdo's wife Selena gave birth to his second child a week ago.

On Monday it emerged that the player had been diagnosed with "a small arrhythmia" a decade ago during routine check-ups of youth teams, according to the director of the National Sports Secretariat, Sebastian Bauza.

Club president Alejandro Balbi said Izquierdo "had never shown any cardiac episode" during examinations at the club, which he joined in January this year. Izquierdo was born in Montevideo in 1991 and began his career in 2017, playing in several first-division Uruguayan clubs. He also played for Atletico San Luis in Mexico.

14-Year-Old Smashes 100m World Record, Refreshes Usain Bolt Memories

Nigeria-born British athlete Divine Iheme looks ready for the grand stage, having impressed one and all with his breathtaking speed on the track. Iheme could be a name that fans would be singing for a long time, after the 14-year-old ran the 100m in a stunning 10.30 seconds at Lee Valley Athletics Centre, breaking the previous record of 10.51 seconds set by Jamaican speedster Sachin Dennis. Only two years ago, when he was aged 12, Iheme was covering the 100m distance in 11.3 seconds. The teenager has made significant progress, to clock 10.30 seconds, breaking the 'world record' in that age group.

If Iheme continues his progress at the same pace, the legendary Usain Bolt's record of finishing a 100m race in 9.58 seconds could be in jeopardy. Iheme isn't the only teenager making waves on the 100m track. 16-year-old Australian Gout Gout also stunned the athletics world recently.

He went viral after running a 100m race at the Queensland Athletics Championships in March in a lightning quick 10.29 seconds. The two could go on to fight for the top podium spot for years to come, creating a duopoly similar to what football greats Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo did for nearly two decades.

Much like Iheme, Gout was also compared to Bolt after he showed his fiery speed on the track.

"It's pretty cool because Usain Bolt is arguably the greatest athlete of all time and just being compared to him is a great feeling," Gout told news.com.au in April.

"Obviously I'm Gout Gout so I'm trying make a name for myself. If I can get to the level he was that would be a great achievement."

Gout had also revealed that he admires Erriyon Knighton and Noah Lyles, the 100m gold medal-winner at Paris Olympics.

"I like Erriyon Knighton because he is a youngster competing up against the best, and Noah Lyles because he is running crazy times," Gout had said.

UP Man Goes To Cops For Filing Complaint, Told To Get 'Jalebis' First

A man who went to a police station in Uttar Pradesh's Hapur to file a complaint was left shocked by an unusual demand from the cops. Chanchal Kumar, who lost his mobile phone, went to the police station to file a complaint but he was told by a police officer to bring one kilogram of 'jalebis' first. Upset over his lost cellphone, the man had no other option but to fulfil the cop's demand.

The incident happened in Kanaur village, around 91 kms from state capital Lucknow, under Bahadurgarh police station limits. On Saturday evening, Chanchal went out to purchase medicines when he lost his mobile phone. Despite a thorough search, he was unable to find it.

At the police station, after listening to his complainant, the cop asked him to either get Balushahi (a North-Indian sweet) or hot Jalebis for them.

Congress Targets BJP After Its Request To Postpone Haryana Poll Day

The Haryana unit of the ruling BJP has written to the Election Commission requesting a brief postponement of the assembly poll slated for October 1, citing holidays before and after the election date that could lead to a lower voter turnout.

While the opposition Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) slammed the BJP, claiming that the ruling party was panicking as it could sense defeat, Abhay Chautala's INLD too sought the deferment of polls.

A Haryana BJP leader on Saturday said the letter was sent by the party's state unit chief Mohan Lal Badoli to the poll panel.

Haryana's Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Agarwal confirmed that the commission received a copy of the communication on Friday over email.

"We have received the communication from state BJP and forwarded it to the Election Commission," Agarwal told PTI.

Varinder Garg, a member of the BJP's state election management committee, said, "We have reasoned that the Assembly election date of October 1 (Tuesday) is preceded by a weekend and followed by more holidays which might hit the voting percentage as people tend to go on vacation on long weekends." Varinder Garg said September 28-29 are Saturday and Sunday while October 1 is a poll holiday. It is followed by more holidays as Gandhi Jayanti falls on October 2 and Maharaja Agrasen Jayanti on October 3, he said.

"We have written to the Election Commission in this regard. For a better turnout, any new date once the string of holidays is over should be fine," Varinder Garg told PTI over the phone.

By taking a day's leave on September 30, people will have six holidays. Due to this long weekend, there is a strong possibility that several families might go on a vacation and give voting a miss, Mohan Lal Badoli said in his letter to the EC.

If it happens, the voting percentage would reduce drastically, he added.

Mohan Lal Badoli also said that on 'Asoj Amavasya' on October 2, several members of the Bishnoi community of Haryana will leave for Nokha tehsil of Bikaner in Rajasthan to participate in an annual fair held on the occasion.

This too can affect the voting percentage, he further said.

Mohan Lal Badoli wrote that it has been the continuous effort of the EC to ensure that the maximum number of people exercise their franchise to strengthen democracy.

Therefore, it would be appropriate that the date fixed for voting for the Haryana Assembly election be changed. While determining a fresh date for the election, it should be made certain that there is no holiday the previous or the following day, he wrote.

We believe that if the EC does this, more and more voters will be able to participate in the election, he wrote.

Mohan Lal Badoli, in his letter, also mentioned that in the past the date of polling has been changed by the EC. For example, the date declared for voting in Punjab Assembly elections -- February 14, 2022 -- was changed to February 20, 2022, due to Sant Ravidas Jayanti on February 16.

In 2022, the then Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, the BJP and its allies, and the BSP had urged the poll panel to postpone the date of voting as lakhs of followers of Guru Ravidas travel to Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh to celebrate the day.

However, Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda said the BJP's stand shows that it has already accepted defeat.

It has been more than a week since the Election Commission announced the poll date. The BJP wants the polls to be deferred as it has accepted defeat, Bhupinder Hooda, who is Leader of the Opposition and former chief minister of Haryana, said.

Polls should be held according to the date fixed by the EC... People of Haryana don't want to see the BJP government in power even for a day, he said.

Bhupinder Hooda's son and Rohtak MP Deepender Hooda while referring to Mohan Lal Badoli's letter, said, "It shows how scared the BJP is of the elections".

The BJP is staring at defeat and is therefore coming up with such childish arguments. It has no issues, work or achievements to show to the people and no candidates to distribute the tickets. This is why the BJP is conspiring to postpone the elections by giving an excuse for holidays, Deepender Hooda said in Hindi on X.

The voters of Haryana are aware. They will not go anywhere for a holiday, but will come to the polling booth in large numbers to vote out the BJP government, he added.

The AAP's Haryana unit said even before the elections took place, the ruling BJP had started looking for excuses as it could sense its impending defeat in the election.

In a post on X, the AAP said if the BJP had done work in the state, it would not have been seeking postponement of polls. This time the BJP's defeat is certain, it said.

Meanwhile, Indian National Lok Dal's (INLD) Chautala said the polling date should be postponed by one or two weeks.

Since people usually go on holidays on long weekends, it will adversely affect the voting percentage which is likely to decrease by 15 to 20 per cent, Chautala said.

The EC on August 16 announced that assembly polls in Haryana would be held in a single phase on October 1 and the results would be declared on October 4.

The BJP is eyeing a third consecutive term while the Congress is looking to wrest power from the ruling outfit.

The tenure of the current Haryana Vidhan Sabha ends on November 3.

No Access To Food: Indian Migrants Stuck For Weeks At Brazilian Airport

Hundreds of migrants from India, Nepal and Vietnam have been stuck in Sao Paulo's international airport for weeks in alarming conditions, sleeping on the floor as they wait to enter Brazil, according to the Public Defender's Office and documents seen by Reuters on Friday.

A spokesman for the office said a 39-year-old migrant from Ghana died two weeks ago of unknown causes. It was not clear whether he died while retained at the airport or on the way to hospital.

At least 666 migrants without visas were waiting to enter Brazil at Guarulhos airport, the official said, with the added uncertainty that the government plans to tighten entry rules on Monday to stem a flow of foreigners using Brazil as a stopover to get to the United States and Canada.

The migrants are held in a restricted area where there is no access to a shower and their movements are limited, making it hard for them to obtain food and water, while children and adolescents are enduring winter cold with no blankets, the official said.

The Public Defender's Office found that the migrants' human rights were being violated with their health deteriorating.

The agency said conditions for the migrants need to be urgently improved while their status is being resolved, and urged authorities in a statement to comply with Brazil's legislation based on the humanitarian principle of accepting refugees and not returning them to their country of origin.

Starting on Monday, foreign travellers without a Brazilian visa who are headed for another country must travel straight on to their destination or return to their home country, Brazil's public security ministry told Reuters on Wednesday.

Brazil has seen a boom in foreign travellers, particularly from Asia, landing in the country for a supposed layover en route to North America, the ministry said in statement.

To enter Brazil, they ask for refugee status, alleging persecution and threats in their home countries, but a majority travel north when they can, according to two reports from authorities seen by Reuters and a senior police source.

Now, those passengers arriving in Sao Paulo without a visa will not be allowed to stay in Brazil, the ministry said.

It was not clear whether the new rules will apply to migrants already at the Sao Paulo airport or apply only to those arriving after the rules go into effect.

Immigration experts are concerned that the proposed rules counter the 1951 UN Refugee Convention, to which Brazil is a party and which calls on countries to take in those at risk in their home country, even if they are undocumented.

The head of Brazil's refugee committee, Jean Uema, told Reuters the rules would apply specifically to Sao Paulo airport and there would be no change to Brazil's policy on asylum seekers.

Watch: Hyderabad YouTuber Throws Money On Street In Viral Video

A YouTuber and Instagrammer tossing cash  into the air in the middle of a road has been widely distributed, drawing massive outrage. The video from Hyderabad's Kukatpally area shows the young man standing amid moving traffic. Then he tosses handfuls of notes in the air.

The traffic comes to a standstill as people get off bikes and auto-rickshaws and scramble to collect the money. The rush for the cash caused massive disruption of traffic and posed a serious risk of accidents. In one video he is seen throwing away cash while riding pillion on a two-wheeler.

The stunt, apparently  performed to gain traction on social media, has been condemned by many on social media. People have called for strict action against the content creator, who has been identified as Power Harsha alias Mahadev , known online as "its_me_power,".

At the end of the video, the YouTuber expressed his intentions to continue such stunts. He even encouraged viewers to join his Telegram channel, where he promised rewards to those who could accurately guess the amount of money he would throw in future videos.

"All that you need to do is to join my telegram channel. Link is in my bio. Many of you know that I have earned a lot of money. You can earn too. Meet me on Telegram channel," he is heard saying.

The Cyberabad Police are yet to take action about the incident.
While throwing away money is not illegal, the chaos it may cause comes under disturbing of peace.

Bangladesh's Interim Government Revokes Sheikh Hasina's Diplomatic Passport

Bangladesh's interim government revoked the diplomatic passport of ousted premier Sheikh Hasina on Thursday, after she fled a student-led uprising by helicopter to India earlier this month.

The move to cancel Sheikh Hasina's documents leaves the former autocratic leader in potential limbo, and comes on the same day that a United Nations team arrived in Dhaka to assess whether to investigate alleged human rights violations.

More than 450 people were killed -- many by police fire -- during the weeks leading up to Sheikh Hasina's ouster, as crowds stormed her official residence in Dhaka and ended her iron-fisted 15-year rule.

The interior ministry said in a statement that Sheikh Hasina's passport and those belonging to former government ministers and ex-lawmakers no longer in their posts "have to be revoked".

It also poses a diplomatic dilemma for Sheikh Hasina's current host, regional powerhouse India.

'Disproportionate force'

Post the revolt and storming of her official residence on August 5, Ms Hasina fled to India

While India is hosting Sheikh Hasina, PM Modi has also offered his support to the new Bangladeshi leader, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who is heading the caretaker administration.

"The former prime minister, her advisers, the former cabinet and all members of the dissolved national assembly were eligible for diplomatic passports by virtue of the positions they held," Dhaka's home ministry said in a statement.

"If they have been removed or retired from their posts, their and their spouses' diplomatic passports have to be revoked."

Dhaka's new authorities said that Sheikh Hasina, and other former top officials during her tenure, could apply for a standard passport, but that those documents were contingent on approval.

"When the aforementioned people apply afresh for ordinary passports, two security agencies have to clear their application for their passports to be issued," the ministry added.

Sheikh Hasina's government was accused of widespread abuses, including the mass detention and extrajudicial killing of political opponents.

The UN rights office asessing the protest response had said in a preliminary report last week that there were "strong indications, warranting further independent investigation, that the security forces used unnecessary and disproportionate force".

Yunus has said his administration would "provide whatever support" UN investigators need.

Separately, a Bangladeshi war crimes tribunal set up by Sheikh Hasina has launched three "mass murder" probes into its founder over the recent unrest.

'Told Amit Shah I Want To Act In Around 22 Films': Union Minister

Actor-cum-politician Suresh Gopi said on Wednesday that if he is removed as Union Minister of State for acting in films while holding his ministerial post, he would consider himself "saved".

Mr Gopi also said that he has requested permission to commence shooting for the film 'Ottakomban', but has not received it yet.

"But I will start shooting for it on September 6," he said.

The Union Minister of State for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Tourism said that there were 20-22 films he really wished to do after hearing the script, and has agreed to act in them.

When he sought permission from Union Home Minister Amit Shah to act in the films, he was asked how many.

"I said around 22. On hearing that, Amit Shah set aside my request letter. But he said permission will be given. Anyways, I will be here on September 6," Mr Gopi said while speaking at an event held here by the Kerala Film Chamber of Commerce.

He said that he will bring three or four officials from the ministry along with him to help him carry out his ministerial duties and for that special arrangements would have to be made on the film sets.

"All this I want to do. So, if they remove me for it, I would consider myself saved. That is all I can say," he said.

Mr Gopi said that he never wished to be a minister and still does not desire it.

"I bowed to their (his leaders) decision to make me a minister after they said that they were giving the post to me for the people of Thrissur who voted me to power and not for myself. I accepted that decision.

"I still obey my leaders and will continue to do so. But without my passion (cinema), I will die," he said.

Woman Wears Shorts To Job Interview, Sent Home. Viral Video Sparks Debate

A woman claims she was sent home from a job interview for wearing shorts, which the recruiter deemed unprofessional. However, the job-seeker, named Tyreshia, defended her outfit choice.

In a TikTok video, Tyreshia insisted she did nothing wrong by wearing black shorts to the interview and provided a full view of her outfit, stating she was "dress-coded."

"The recruiter rejected me because of this!" she wrote in the text overlay, showing the outfit that led to her being sent home. Although she was given the option to change and return, Tyreshia refused on principle.

"So, I just got dress-coded during an interview," she explained in the video. "They decided to reschedule the interview for tomorrow. But before that, the lady asked if I wanted to go change and come back. I said no."

Her video quickly went viral on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter), amassing 34 million views.

The consensus on X was that her outfit was inappropriate for a job interview, though a few people voiced their support.

"Office appropriate and interview appropriate is different. She just learned that lesson," wrote one X user. "Do not wear shorts to interview people. What are we doing?" another said.

"If she walked into an interview with me in shorts there wouldn't be a reschedule," an X user opined. "I'm more concerned about why she thinks this is ok, to the extent of making a video about it," a user said.

"Counterpoint: performative professionalism is an archaic concept that only exists to make power-hungry recruiters feel something in their hollow existences. Unless the outfit is actively offensive or sexualised, the only time dress should be a factor is if it's a front-facing job," an X user said.

Panel Report Reveals Stories Of Harassment Women Face In Malayalam Cinema

The much-awaited Justice Hema Committee report on harassment faced by women in the Malayalam cinema industry has recorded explosive accounts of harassment, exploitation and ill-treatment of female professionals, and has alleged that a "criminal gang" was controlling the industry where unyielding women are squeezed out.

The panel report also alleged there was a "power nexus" consisting of a handful of producers, directors, actors and production controllers.

The Kerala government constituted the panel after the 2017 actress assault case involving actor Dileep to study issues of sexual harassment and gender inequality in Malayalam cinema.

The report released on Monday sheds light on the widespread and persistent sexual harassment faced by women in the Malayalam cinema industry, with many alleging they were subjected to unwanted advances even before commencing work.

The women actors who are ready to compromise are given code names, and those who are not ready to yield are pushed out of the field, as per the report.

The report highlighted the widespread nature of the issue, sparking concerns about the safety and well-being of women in the industry.

"It has come out in evidence that certain men in cinema, who are well-known and well-reputed for their ability as artist, director or whoever he be in the film industry have shocked certain women in cinema by sexual harassment and physical advances made by them towards them," the expert panel report said.

A copy of the report was given to the media under the RTI Act after five years of its submission to the government.

In a series of shocking and shameful revelations, the report stated that female actors faced harassment, including instances where the doors of their rooms were knocked on by intoxicated individuals in the film industry.

Many of them, who suffered sexual harassment, were reluctant to complain about this to the police due to fear, it said.

"The sky is full of mysteries, with the twinkling stars and the beautiful moon. But scientific investigation revealed that the stars do not twinkle, nor does the moon look beautiful," the report said.

"Do not trust what you see; even salt looks like sugar," the opening lines of the report said.

As per the report, submitted by the three-member panel, the major issue which women face in the film industry is sexual harassment.

"It is the worst evil which women in cinema face in the film industry. The women in cinema are most reluctant to speak out about the sexual harassment which they are subjected to, even to other women or close relatives," it said.

The commission said it was "shocked to hear the sexual harassment stories" revealed to it by women working in the Malayalam film industry.

"The offer to act or for doing any other job in cinema comes to a woman coupled with demand for sexual favours. As I already mentioned, the woman would be asked to adjust and compromise, thereby she is asked to surrender to sexual demands," the report said.

"In most of the hotels, where they are staying, the doors are knocked by the men working in cinema who could be mostly under intoxication. Many women have stated that knocking will not be polite or decent but, they repeatedly bang the door by force," the report detailed.

The panel said even though many sexual acts committed against women in cinema come under the IPC and under the definition of the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, prohibition and redressal) Act (POSH), the women who suffered the atrocities prefer to keep silence.

"An artist added that if they take up the matter before the court or the police, they will face worse consequences, including threat to life. The artist added that threat to life will not only be against the victims but even their close family members will be in danger," the report said.

The report has categorically mentioned that the police should register FIRs against crimes that are being committed in the industry, and many are not coming out fearing for their lives.

The publication of the report, initially scheduled for July 24, was put on hold by the Kerala High Court following a plea from a Malayalam film producer.

The court later dismissed the plea on August 13 and directed the government to release the report within a week.

However, the publication was delayed again due to a plea from an actress, which was heard by the High Court on Monday. The government finally released the report on Monday evening.

State Cultural Affairs Minister Saji Cheriyan said the government has taken note of the findings and recommendations of the Justice Hema Committee.

The government would convene a cinema conclave in the next two months to discuss and resolve the issues in the film industry, he said.

The opposition Congress expressed shock over the findings of the committee and sought to know whom the government tried to protect by keeping the report without releasing it.

"The action of the government and the chief minister who kept the report in cold storage so far was a criminal offence," Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly V D Satheesan told reporters in Kochi.

Actor Siddique, who is also the president of actor outfit AMMA, said they would study the report in detail and take necessary steps to address the issues.

Women in Cinema Collective, an outfit of women professionals in the industry, expressed happiness over the releasing of the report and thanked the panel members, media, women organisations and the lawyers.

Manmohan Singh Was Part Of Lateral Entry: Minister Hits Out At Rahul Gandhi

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on Monday hit out at Rahul Gandhi for his claim that the government was trying to bypass the reservation system through lateral entry, reminding the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha that former prime minister Manmohan Singh was made the finance secretary in 1976 through the lateral entry route.

The minister also dismissed as "baseless" Rahul Gandhi's allegation that RSS people will be hired as public servants through this mode and pointed out that it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who made the system of lateral entry methodical by giving the mandate to UPSC for framing rules. Earlier, he pointed out, there was no formal system in place for such entry into governance.

"Whatever appointments or recruitments or selections are to be done, UPSC will do it. Where is the issue of BJP, RSS in this? Baseless allegations are being made," Arjun Meghwal told PTI Videos in Bikaner.

He said that RSS is an organisation that promotes cultural nationalism.

The minister alleged that Rahul Gandhi was trying to mislead people and tarnish the image of institutions like UPSC by "spreading lies".

"The efforts of Rahul Gandhi, who is making such false allegations, are never going to succeed," he said, adding that despite being the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, which is a constitutional post, Rahul Gandhi was making irresponsible statements.

"Dr Manmohn Singh was also part of the lateral entry. How did you directly make him the finance secretary in 1976?" the minister said.

He said that the then Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia entered service through the lateral entry route. He said CPP chairperson Sonia Gandhi was made head of the National Advisory Council. "The prime minister's is a constitutional post. But is NAC a constitutional body," he quipped adding Sonia Gandhi was placed above the prime minister.

He alleged the then prime minister Jawahar Lal Nehru had opposed reservation in 1961 and as the leader of opposition, Rajiv Gandhi opposed OBC reservation on the floor of Lok Sabha.

"You started lateral entry. Prime Minister Modi made it methodical," he said.

The minister noted that these are contractual posts. "Suppose an environment expert becomes a deputy secretary, what is the problem... person has to be an expert in a particular field," he said.

He said the lateral entry is open to all. "Persons of SC, ST and OBC categories also apply. IAS vacancies are different. They claim we are ending reservations. What were you doing when you were recruiting? Suddenly their love for OBCs has come out. They are trying to mislead SC, ST, OBC students," he said.

Condemning the rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata, he said that the whole country is ashamed.

"After the incident, efforts were made to destroy the evidence. It is a very shameful incident and we condemn it in very strong words," he said.

Later, Arjun Meghwal, who is an MP from Bikaner, reached a BSF outpost in Khanuwali on the Indo-Pakistan border and celebrated the festival of Raksha Bandhan with women BSF personnel.

Retired Colonel Recalls How Daughter Was Harassed On Her Way To College

In the wake of the Kolkata rape-murder case, a retired colonel recently took to social media to share why he supports his daughter's decision to settle outside the country. In a post on X, user Col Sanjay Pande shared that his daughter completed her three years in graduation in Delhi. "We, then, lived in a super posh colony in South Delhi. College was 15 minutes walk of which 7 mins was within colony and seven on main road," he said.

The user went on to say that half the route towards her daughter's college was inside a "very premium government auditorium" and the rest was on a footpath with "an institutional area wall". "SAFEST right? No shops, no public, main road, no people and absolutely safe road," he asked. In the following lines, he shared his daughter's harrowing experiences.

Take a look at the post below:

"Cars would slow down and guys would ask her to 'accompany'! They would ask 'rate'. I was sure someone would be doing the same with the guys sister, daughter, wife too. In second year I gave her a car exclusively. No stepping on road. Ever," he shared.

The retired colonel posted how when his daughter wanted to settle abroad, he agreed and supported her. "This was 13 years back. She has right to her life. She is abroad since then. I could afford. What about 95% plus who cannot?" he expressed.

The post was shared just a day back. Since then, it has accumulated more than 878,000 views.

Reacting to the post, one user shared, "I lived in South Delhi and each time I had to take an auto or cab at night because of late work, it gave me so much anxiety. Just waiting for the auto made so many men stop and stare. I can totally relate to her."

"It's so sad really. As an Indian woman, I wish someone could teach our men to respect women as human beings. It has to start in every household, every school, every step of the way and I'm not sure how we make it happen but it needs to happen," commented another.

"It's an everyday tale. The fact that a lot of people normalise it and say a woman should learn self defence or fight this or shame the abuser is illogical. Why should women not just step out and go about her day ?!" said a third user.

"It's common behavior. Used to happen routinely in the area outside our hospital, especially if standing at bus stop. One fellow was so persistent I removed the lab coat from my bag and showed him, saying 'arre hasptal se hain, bhai'. He said 'sorry sister' and left," shared a fourth X user.

Top Medical Body Suggests Not More Than 74 Hours Work Week For Medics

Excessive duty hours pose risks to the physical and mental health of medics and also compromise patient safety, an NMC taskforce said while recommending that resident doctors work no more than 74 hours a week and get a day off every week.

Ensuring seven to eight hours of sleep daily for medical students is crucial for their mental and physical health and requests for leave should be judiciously considered and not unreasonably declined, the National Task Force on Mental Health and Wellbeing of Medical Students said in its report.

Collaborative planning of duty hours by heads of departments, faculty, senior residents and residents needs to be done and, if there is an increased clinical workload, the hospital or medical college should hire more senior residents and medical officers, it said.

"It is imperative to recognise that postgraduates and interns primarily serve educational purposes rather than filling gaps in healthcare staffing," it added.

Strict implementation of National Medical Commission (NMC) regulations on ragging is also mandatory, according to the taskforce report.

It emphasised that medical colleges should have active anti-ragging cells with strict penalties for offenders to mitigate the stress induced by ragging.

Medical colleges could consider granting a 10-day vacation at least once a year to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical students on a rotational basis, the taskforce said and unsderscored that this would allow the medics to meet their family members that could foster bonding.

It also called for appropriate conditions such as comfortable rest areas, nutritious meals and hydration facilities for medics during duty hours.

Hospitals should provide regular breaks and ensure food availability in duty rooms, it said.

The taskforce also recommended a gatekeeper training programme in medical colleges aimed at establishing a proactive network for identifying at-risk individuals and connecting them with professional help.

This programme will involve comprehensive training for participants to recognise warning signs and refer students to mental health services.

With the support of psychiatry departments, local protocols should be developed and the gatekeeper training programme initiated across the campus, involving all stakeholders, the taskforce said.

"Mental health education should be integrated into undergraduate and postgraduate curricula through lectures, workshops and seminars," it said in the report and recommended that medical teachers, students and the administration should undergo regular training in mental health -- either through periodic in-person sessions or online via the Swayam portal.

"The training modules should cover mental health, stress management, building resilience, prevention of substance use, gatekeeper training and basic counselling techniques. Specific emphasis should be placed on handling confidentiality matters concerning individuals with mental illness," it said.

It also called for abolishing fees for repeating semesters, saying this would reduce economic burden and stress.

Transparent and standardised grading systems and an independent appeals process are essential, it added.

For evaluation and assessment methods, it said "a fair and unbiased evaluation system is essential" and suggested that institutions could offer a mix of grading systems to reduce stress and promote a collaborative learning environment.

The task force also recommended introducing supplementary exams to reduce academic pressure and anxiety and for providing a fairer assessment system and supporting student wellbeing.

It suggested announcing exam results using roll numbers to enhance privacy, reduce stress and promote a fair academic environment.

Expanding postgraduate medical seats addresses healthcare needs, enhances specialist care and reduces student migration, the report said.

The taskforce also recommended abolishing seat-leaving fees or bonds.

Students who abandon their seats after admission should be prohibited from applying to medical colleges for 24 months from the date of leaving, it suggested.

Additionally, medical colleges can fill the vacated seat in the same category (government/management seat) in the next calendar year.

The report said a comprehensive orientation programme within four weeks for undergraduate students and two weeks for postgraduate students upon joining was essential for new entrants.

"This programme should introduce students to the medical profession, campus resources and the importance of physical, mental and spiritual health," it said and also recommended involving family members during the induction programme and periodically, at least once a year, reasoning that it would help them understand the expectations and stressors faced by medics.

This understanding would enable families to provide effective support and enhance the ability of students to cope with academic and clinical demands.

"Implementing a 24/7 support system, such as the TeleMANAS initiative by the Union Ministry of Health, is advisable. Medical colleges should have plans for referral, evaluation, management and follow-up for students with mental illnesses. Confidential, accessible counselling services must be widely promoted. Medical colleges should consider appointing at least two counsellors for every 500 students," the report said.

Medical colleges should provide free diagnostics and treatment, including medicines, for physical and mental health issues within the campus, it stated.

The taskforce also suggested that the NMC should establish a national portal for grievance redress, enabling secure and efficient complaint handling

"Women Attacked, Disrobed, On Bengal's Streets": Governor Turns The Screw

Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose has expressed displeasure with the state police's handling of the rape-murder of a young doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College. He has also called an emergency meeting with Vice Chancellors of the state's universities and will also hold a meeting with protesters tomorrow.

"The Governor has expressed his displeasure on complicity and alleged connivance of the police in matters of crime, particularly campus crimes," read a statement from the Governor's House.

Such a crime "shames the whole of Bengal, shames India.. and humanity," he said in a video message.

Bengal, he said, "has to see reason".

"We have seen incidents women being attacked on street, disrobing... Flogging on the street... public flogging. All this is repeatedly happening on the streets of Bengal," added the Governor, who has been at loggerheads with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her government in the past.

"Is this the place where Rabindranath Tagore said, 'Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high'," he said, quoting a poem by the Nobel laureate.

Effective protection should be given to girl students, women staff and members of non-teaching staff immediately, he said.

The statement from his office said the Governor "deplores the absolute failure of the Kolkata Police in handling the case in a just and fair manner".  It also said that he has met many delegations over the matter and will be having discussions with the protestors tomorrow.

Though the case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation, the protests in Bengal are continuing. It has cascaded over the state's borders and spread across the country, with even small towns out to show solidarity.

Auto Workers' Body Files Charges Against Trump, Musk. Here's Why

The United Auto Workers Union said on Tuesday it has filed federal labour charges against Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk over attempts to threaten and intimidate workers.

The action came after Musk and Trump held a two-hour conversation on social media platform X Monday night, during which the two discussed workers walking off the job to go on strike.

"You're the greatest cutter," Trump said during the conversation. "I mean, I look at what you do. You walk in, you just say: 'You want to quit?' They go on strike - I won't mention the name of the company - but they go on strike. And you say: 'That's okay, you're all gone.'"

Under federal law, workers cannot be fired for going on strike, and threatening to do so is illegal under the National Labor Relations Act, the UAW said in its statement.

The UAW has endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in her bid for U.S. president. She met with union officials and workers last week near Detroit.

Blog: Paris Olympics 2024 - The Pain And Pleasure Of Coming 4th

My Dear Ira,

All set for your second year of studies in Edmonton, I hope. It's 'Summer Time' in Canada in more ways than one, isn't it? The Paris Olympics 2024 are just over, and 17-year-old Summer McIntosh must surely be the toast of the nation and all over the social media feeds of young students like you. What a swimmer!

By herself, Summer won 3 Gold medals and 1 Silver! If she were a country, she alone would be ranked 28th on the medal tally table. For perspective, India, with 1 Silver and 5 Bronze medals, is at 71. Imagine a Canadian teenager setting OlyMedalGoals for a nation of 1.4 billion people!

Canadian 'Summer' - About Winning and Also Coming 4th

But here's another incredible fact about Summer McIntosh - across the 2021 Tokyo Games (yes, she was there at age 14!) and the Paris Games, Summer has finished 4th in 5 Olympic swimming events. So, at just 17, not only does she have 4 major Olympic medals, but she has also missed out on 5! (And with that, I have ended three paragraphs in a row with exclamation marks, potentially upsetting my copy editor. I was informed that they could do nothing but to retain them!)

And that's the beauty of the Olympics, heck, of life even - sometimes, in fact, like Summer, more often than not, we do come 4th. We do have a 'near-miss'; we do lose out on the recognition that an Olympic medal brings; we do miss out on the photo-op that comes with a podium finish. That's life, so wonderfully reflected at the Olympics.

Let's look closer at India's performance at the Paris Olympics. Yes, Ms. McIntosh does make us look like plodders in the world of sports, but things could have been better than just 6 medals. We actually had 9 athletes who came achingly close to winning a medal.

Team India - We Had 9 'Near-Misses'

There was our Mixed Archery team of Dhiraj Bommadevara and Ankita Bhakat, who lost their Bronze medal match to the USA. Poor Lakshya Sen finished 4th too, losing his Men's Singles badminton Bronze medal match to Lee Zii Jia, after actually winning the first game quite easily. In boxing, Nishant Dev and Lovlina Borgohain lost their quarter-final bouts. Remember, in boxing, if you reach the Semis, you are assured of a Bronze medal. But that didn't happen.

In shooting, the discipline in which we fielded some serious world-beating talent, we did win 3 Bronze medals - 2 to Manu Bhaker and 1 to Swapnil Kusale - but we also lost 3 medals. Arjun Babuta (10m Air Rifle), Manu Bhaker (25m Pistol, her favourite event!), and Maheshwari Chauhan with AJS Naruka (Mixed Skeet Team) all came 4th. If Manu had won a third bronze, it would have been staggering because no Indian athlete had ever won 2 medals at the same Olympics before her. But it was not to be.

After winning a memorable Silver medal in Tokyo, Mirabai Chanu was also expected to 'lift' a medal in Paris. But sadly, she too finished 4th in her 49kg weightlifting event, missing out on a Bronze medal by just one frustrating kilo.

And of course, the unkindest cut of all was reserved for the amazing Vinesh Phogat, who missed out on her assured Silver medal by just 100 grams. She had taken out the world number one in her category, Yui Susaki of Japan, who had never lost a match, and beaten two other strong opponents to march into the final. But at the weigh-in the next morning, she was over by the slightest of margins - 100 grams - and was disqualified, sending all of India into a funk.

Imagine if we had won these 9 medals; India's medal tally would have been 15, way more than our highest total at a single Olympics, which was 7 medals at Tokyo in 2021.

But that's the cross an athlete carries when he or she comes 4th.

Legends Come 4th Too - Milkha Singh and PT Usha

And yet, being 4th is no mean feat. Ask Milkha Singh and PT Usha, arguably India's most iconic Olympians until the likes of Abhinav Bindra and now Neeraj Chopra came along with their individual Gold medal-winning achievements. Both Milkha and Usha came 4th, but we still revere them in India.

Milkha Singh, at the 1960 Rome Olympics, was actually one of the favourites to win his 400m race, having beaten the ultimate winner Otis Davis earlier. But on the day, it was an exceptionally fast race, with Davis becoming the first man ever to run a sub-45 second 400m. The first four athletes, including Milkha, who came 4th, broke the Olympic record! His timing of 45.73 in that race stood as a National Record for almost 40 years. So yes, 'The Flying Sikh' as he was known, did come 4th that day. But he also became a legend that day.

PT Usha's story is also worth being retold. In 1984, at the Los Angeles Olympics, Usha beat the USA's Jodi Brown (who came 2nd in the Final) in the Semis of the 400m hurdles and was a serious medal contender. Already a champion sprinter, she had taken up hurdling just a year before the Games. In the race itself, Usha came famously 4th by a margin of just 1/100th of a second, clocking 55.42 seconds against 55.41 by Romanian athlete Cristieana Cojocaru, who took the Bronze.

So, there was no medal, but Usha's performance did cement her iconic status. Before wrapping up her career, the 'Payyoli Express,' so named after her birth village in Kerala, went on to win an amazing 4 Golds and 7 Silvers across multiple Asian Games. In 2022, she became the first woman President of the Indian Olympic Association and was also nominated to the Rajya Sabha. Not bad at all for someone who came 4th, right?

Besides India's 9 'near-misses,' the 2024 Paris Olympics has seen some other unusual '4th place' stories play out, which underline both the pain and the pleasure of being the 'near-miss' 4th finisher.

The 'Pain' of Coming 4th Twice - Rhasidat and Erriyon

For pain, it would be hard to beat Rhasidat Adeleke of Ireland. Of Nigerian descent, but born and brought up in Ireland, Rhasidat faced the agony of not one, but two 4th place finishes in Paris. She finished 4th in the 400m final, and then again in the 4X400m relay. In the relay, Ireland was beaten to the Bronze by just 0.18 seconds, which is close for a race over 1600 meters. She must be feeling lousy right now, but these 'near-misses' will only motivate the 21-year-old to come back stronger in 2028 at the Los Angeles Games.

There's also Erriyon Knighton. Just 20, he has already raced in two 200m Olympic finals, in Tokyo and Paris, and would you believe it - finished 4th both times! Erriyon was just 17 in Tokyo and ran an amazing 19.99 sec race, and came 4th. In Paris, he ran 19.99 yet again. And again, came 4th. To add to the pain, here's a fun fact - had he run 19.99 at the 2016 Rio Olympics, when the event was won by the great Usain Bolt, Erriyon would have won the Silver. That's how it is. But watch out for him as well in LA. At 24, and at the peak of his athletic prowess, he will be a man on a mission, running on home soil. He will break that 4th place 'bogey' in LA for sure.

The Pleasure of 'Redemption' - Jakob Ingebrigtsen

There was one guy who got the '4th Place' monkey on and off his back in Paris itself - middle and long-distance star Jakob Ingebrigtsen of Norway. Hype follows him wherever he goes because he is good. But sadly, in his pet event, the 1500m, Ingebrigtsen didn't live up to the hype, and came 4th. He cut a sorry figure after the race, as American runner Cole Hocker lapped up the attention, winning and setting a new Olympic record.

But then, a few days later, Ingebrigtsen showed up for the 5000m final, and this time, he won! And that's what coming 4th can do for you. It can give you a reality check, which, if you feed off in a positive way, can do wonders. That's what this champion did too - put his head down, revved himself up again, and won.

Coming 4th and Embracing It

Coming 4th also is about understanding that no matter how deserving you are, no matter how compelling the story of your life, you still have to compete and win on the day. And that's the story of Dominic Lobalu. Few people have had a tougher journey - in 2007, just 9 years old, he lost both parents when his village in South Sudan was attacked. He spent the next 10 years in refugee camps in Kenya. But he was lucky his running talent got spotted, and this year in Paris, he was part of the tiny 'Refugee Olympic Team' (which is such a great idea, isn't it?)

Lobalu ran in that same Ingebrigtsen 5000m 'redemption' race, but as fate would have it, he finished 4th. Surely, a medal would have brought much-needed cheer to millions of refugees roughing it out in camps across the world. But it was not to be. He lost out to (yet another) American, Grant Fisher, by just 0.14 seconds, which is like a photo finish in a 5-kilometer race.

And that, Ira, is how it is. Coming 4th is a part of life. But it is to be embraced. It shows we really gave it our best, giving us hope to come back and do better. And the world too, more often than not, does acknowledge and applaud, even when we come in 4th.

So, if you ever come 4th, no worries. It's proof that you rock. It's proof that you turned up. For Mama and me, that's all that matters.

Love,

Papa.

Amid Criticism, Centre To Prepare Fresh Draft Of Broadcasting Bill

The government today said it will hold further consultations and publish a fresh draft of the Broadcasting Services Regulation Bill after certain provisions of the previous draft raised concerns among online content creators as it sought to club them with OTT or digital news broadcasters, bringing them under the ambit of the ministry's Content and Advertisement Code.

The previous draft bill and explanatory notes were placed in the public domain in November last year.

Media bodies such as DigiPub and the Editors Guild of India claimed that digital media organisations and civil society associations were not consulted on the move.

The draft bill also drew criticism from the opposition Congress with Priyanka Gandhi Vadra accusing the government of trying to "gag" digital media, social media, OTT platforms and those who write and speak in a private capacity by bringing in the bill.

The government, on the other hand, has maintained that the bill is still at the drafting stage and consultation with stakeholders is currently underway.

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting today said that additional time has been given to stakeholders till October 15.

"The Ministry is holding a series of consultations with the stakeholders on the draft bill. A fresh draft will be published after detailed consultations," the ministry said in a post on X.

The bill seeks to directly regulate streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+Hotstar as over-the-top, or OTT, broadcasting services.

The provisions in the draft bill would have made it mandatory for individual online content creators to appoint a grievance redressal officer and a content evaluation committee once they crossed a certain number of subscribers.

If cleared, it would replace Cable Television Network Act as well as a slew of policies and guidelines drawn up later to plug holes.

Sloth Borne Virus That Has Killed People In Their 20s Spreading In Europe

A debilitating virus originating from sloths and transmitted by midges has been reported in Europe for the first time, officials have confirmed. In June and July, Europe saw 19 imported cases of the Oropouche virus, as reported by the European Center for Disease Control. Spain accounted for 12 cases, Italy for five, and Germany for two, the Manchester Evening News.

The virus is primarily spread through insect bites, including mosquitoes, and originates from pale-throated sloths, non-human primates, and birds.

Currently, there is no vaccine available for the virus, which belongs to the same family of diseases as Zika virus and Dengue Fever.

Dr Danny Altmann, a professor of Immunology at Imperial College London, told The Telegraph, "We should definitely be worried. Things are changing and may become unstoppable."

Outbreaks of the virus have previously been reported in several countries across South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean. In 2024, specific outbreaks were recorded in Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru, and more recently in Cuba.

Of the cases recorded in Europe, 18 involved recent travel to Cuba, while one case in Italy involved travel to Brazil.

Oropouche can cause symptoms such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, and muscle and joint pains, with more severe symptoms occurring occasionally. These symptoms typically subside after four days. According to the ECDC, fatal outcomes are extremely rare, and recovery is common.

However, The Lancet reported on July 25 that two deaths caused by Oropouche were recorded for the first time in Brazil, involving two young women with no underlying health conditions.

Between January and mid-July, more than 8,000 cases were reported in Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Colombia, and Cuba.

The ECDC assesses the risk of infection for EU citizens travelling to or residing in epidemic areas as moderate due to the high number of cases reported in the Americas.

The European authority has advised travellers to affected regions to use personal protective measures to reduce the risk of insect bites, both during outdoor activities and inside homes. This includes the use of insect repellent and wearing long-sleeved shirts and long trousers.

Man Abandons Family On Vacation Because Mother-In-Law Used His Toothpaste

A man who left his family behind on a European vacation, because his mother-in-law used his toothpaste, is facing backlash online. In a post on Reddit's popular "AITA" (Am I the A******) subreddit, the man, 38, wrote that he and his wife, 35, had been planning on taking a vacation to Venice, Italy with their five-year-old daughter. "Venice has always been my wife's idea of a romantic city, so it's been her dream to go there," the Reddit user wrote. However, the man said that his wife's mother soon found out about the trip and was invited to join as well.

"My wife was very supportive of this idea, but I was more reluctant," the man said. "My wife planned everything, booking the hotels and the restaurants," he added. However, to his "dismay", his wife booked just one room for the group of four with two queen beds, setting off a series of conflicts. The Redditor argued that because of the room setup, his mother-in-law was "constantly in my space" because she was sharing his wife's "expensive" products, such as face wash, shampoo and lotion, and sitting on their bed.

Take a look at the post below:

AITA for going home early on a family vacation after my mother in law constantly invaded my privacy?
byu/Objective-Search5603 inAmItheAsshole

"It is very unhygienic to me and I don't like that she was sitting on the bed that me and my wife share, as I am a very private person," the man said. "She also rummaged through our suitcase looking for a hair tie, and it really irked me that she did so without asking me. I don't like the thought of her looking through our stuff when we're gone, so I locked it," he continued.

The moment the man called his "final straw" was when he realised that his mother-in-law had been using his and his wife's toothpaste, which he claimed made him feel "ill". "I don't like the thought of her putting her tooth brush close to (or even on) the toothpaste nozzle and I was ill the more I thought about it," he wrote.

"I asked MIL if the only reason she came was to freeload off of me and my wife, as she didn't pay for any of the expenses (hotel, amenities, food), only her own plane tickets. I said that I've asked her politely several times to stop using my wife's stuff, especially because I share it with her and it's very inappropriate," the user continued.

According to him, his mother-in-law told his wife about the incident, and she, in turn, screamed at him. At the time, he noted, he felt "very angry" because he paid for the trip with his own money and it was now "ruined".

"I changed the date of my plane ticket and went straight home. My wife has called me several times afterwards, screaming at me and saying that our daughter is upset," he finished the post, noting that his wife had her own bank card and could pay for herself to either get home or stay in Italy. He also added that he had been ignoring his wife's calls "to take some time for my own mental health."

"I feel bad that our daughter was caught in the situation, but it was really not acceptable what my MIL did and I had to set some boundaries before it gets worse," he finished.

The post was shared just two days back. Since then, it has accumulated more than 1,000 upvotes. In the comments section, users declared that the user was, indeed, "the a******", arguing that he wasn't clear about what he wanted from both his mother-in-law and his wife, and that he had unrealistic expectations for cleanliness.

"Your wife books the wrong hotel room so your solution is to abandon her on her dream vacation, forcing her to care for your high-maintenance kindergartener on her own? Couldn't you have booked a separate room for your MIL instead of abandoning your wife and child?" wrote one user.

"Sharing toothpaste gives him cooties? And MIL sitting on the bed is bad because it's unhygienic? Why does [he] even care that MIL is sharing wife's face wash, shampoo etc," said another.

"You are actively harming your marriage by continuing to ignore her calls. All of this happened because you couldn't communicate like an adult (how hard is it to say 'let's go buy another toothpaste so you don't have to use ours' for example?) and now you're doing the opposite of damage control by avoiding her on purpose and claiming that it's for your mental health." expressed a third user.

In the comments section, the original post then wrote to his critics, thanking them for the advice and noting that he realised his mistake. "I'm taking tonight to write a sincere apology and I will be calling my wife first thing in the morning tomorrow. Thank you again. I love her more than anything and I want to make amends," the man wrote.

Uncontacted Tribe In Peru Attacks Encroaching Loggers With Bows And Arrows

Peru's Mashco Piro tribe recently used bows and arrows to attack loggers suspected of encroaching on their territory in the Amazon. According to CBS News, the regional Indigenous organisation FENAMAD said on Monday that it believes illegal logging was taking place on Mashco Piro territory and that one logger was injured in the July 27 attack.

This comes weeks after photos emerged of the uncontacted tribe searching for food on a beach in the Peruvian Amazon. Experts say the pictures were evidence that logging concessions are "dangerously close" to its territory. Survival International, an advocacy group for Indigenous peoples which closely follows the Mashco Piro's issues, said that photos and videos showed about 53 male Mashco Piro on the beach. The group estimated as many as 100 to 150 tribal members would have been in the area with women and children nearby.

"It is presumably illegal because the area where the incident occurred is a forestry concession that belonged to Wood Tropical Forest until November 2022, and we are not aware of a concession that has requested or granted enabling rights in the same area," said a FENAMAD representative, speaking anonymously out of personal security concerns, per CBS News

The organisation further stated that a lack of protection measures by the Peruvian government and the increased activity of companies and illegal operators on the Mascho Piro territory could produce "devastating consequences", such as the transmission of diseases and increased violence.

Notably, in 2022, two loggers were shot with arrows while fishing in the area. There have also been several other previous reports of conflicts, the outlet reported.

According to FENAMAD, increased logging activity in the area is likely pushing the tribe out of their traditional lands. They believe that the Mashco Piro may be venturing closer to settlements in search of food and a safer refuge.

Separately, Survival International said it is pressuring the Peruvian government to move deeper into these areas of the Amazon to help control the situation. "This is a permanent emergency. For the last month we have been seeing the Mascho Piro every two weeks at different points, and in all of them they are surrounded by loggers," Teresa Mayo, a researcher at Survival International, told CBS News.

"It's truly a matter of life and death. And only the government can and has the duty to stop it," Ms Mayo said.

Laundering Charges Framed Against Ex Tamil Nadu Minister Senthil Balaji

A special court in Chennai framed charges against former Tamil Nadu Minister V Senthil Balaji under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act on Thursday in connection with an alleged cash-for-jobs scam. According to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), the alleged scam took place between 2011 and 2015, when Mr Balaji was the Tamil Nadu transport minister under the AIADMK government led by the late J Jayalalithaa.

During the proceedings on Thursday, Senthil Balaji pleaded not guilty, alleged political vendetta and said he wanted to cross-examine witnesses. The court, however, adjourned the case to August 16 for the cross-examination.

Mr Balaji was arrested by the ED in connection with the alleged scam in June 2023 when he was the electricity minister under Chief Minister MK Stalin of the DMK. He was taken into custody after being questioned for hours and was hospitalised after complaining of chest pain.

The minister was retained by the Tamil Nadu government as a show of support but resigned in February this year after the Madras High Court said political compulsion could not outweigh public morality.

The DMK has accused the BJP of misusing central agencies, including the ED, to target political opponents. The BJP has denied the allegations and claimed that the ED is following the rule book.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court observed that the ED needs to focus on the quality of prosecution and evidence, citing low conviction rates in cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The observation came after Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai told the Lok Sabha that more than 5,200 money laundering cases had been registered by the ED since 2014 and convictions were obtained in 40.
